Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna DOC Sella & Mosca 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Color: Initially dark, ruby red, during maturation it loses intensity and takes on a warmer tone. Bouquet: Mesmerizing scent, redolent of violets. Taste: Warm, dry, and harmonious with plumy fruit flavors and an aristocratic oak overtone.

Light in color and thin in extraction, this Cannonau opens with aromas of forest berry, red candy, blue flowers, white stone, fennel seed and walnut nuttiness. There's enough dimension and structure here to pair with roasted pork, fried chicken or cheese-topped pasta.

The 2007 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is a pleasurable, up-front wine with good balance and character. Dried cherries, wild herbs and worn-in leather are some of the notes that flow from this forward Cannonau. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.

The 2005 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is made in a light to medium-bodied style that emphasizes its ethereal, perfumed aromatics rather than an overt expression of fruit, as is often the case with other Cannonaus. This understated, elegant wine reveals a core of sweet cherries that gradually emerges with air. It remains a feminine wine of notable class, particularly at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010.

The 2006 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is a fabulous wine for the money. This isn't the most complex Cannonau readers will come across, but it nevertheless impresses for its persistence, purity of fruit and wonderful balance. Dried cherries, crushed flowers and spices linger on the ethereal finish. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
