At Weingut Selbach-Oster we can trace wine-growing in the family back to the year 1660. We grow Riesling on 20 hectares (50 acres, as per harvest 2007) of steep, south facing mountain slopes that face the Mosel River . The Selbach-Oster vineyards are located on some of the best vineyard land in the heart of the Mosel wine country called “ Mittelmosel”: Zeltingen (with Sonnenuhr, Schlossberg and Himmelreich), Wehlen (with Sonnenuhr), Graacher (with Domprobst and Himmelreich) and Bernkastel (with Badstube). With 55% proportion we still use the traditional “Fuder “ barrel made from German oak (This is old oak since we do not want woody flavours to mask the purity of fruit and soil flavour. A “Fuder” holds 1000 litres). The balance in our cellars is stainless steel and a little bit of fi-berglass tanks with a maximum size of 3000 litres per unit, ensuring low temperatures dur-ing fermentation and with it the preservation of freshness and delicacy of aroma. More than 50 % of Selbach-Oster vineyards are still planted with very old, ungrafted vines, yielding very concentrated fruit from small berries. Weingut Selbach-Oster is ranked by the German press as one of the best three dozen produc-ers in all of Germany and amongst the top ten in the Mosel. In the international press, Sel-bach-Oster is rated correspondingly high (Hugh Johnson, Robert Parker, Wine Spectator) and regularly ranks amongst the top two dozen German estates. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

I have never been disappointed by any bottle from this winery. Some of the wines are more interesting than others, but all are very good.

Medium sweet but finishes dry. More mineral than fruit. Drinks well. Sleep not disturbed.

Displaying the typical charred earthy notes of this site in the nose along with mint and grapefruit the Selbachs 2005 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese practically explodes on the palate with sweet florality talcum mint grapefruit fresh apple and a pungent spicy honeyed burst of botrytis. This is quite voluminous yet remains firm and bright. Spearmint brown spices wet stone char and grapefruit zest all join apple and honey in a rich yet irresistibly refreshing finish. The 2005 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese comes from ancient vines in several of the Selbachs best parcels in the core of the Sonnenuhr. Heady sweet and exotic floral notes waft from the glass along with scents of vanilla apple jelly and pungent grapefruit rind and lemon oil. On the glossy rich yet bright palate high-toned peach pear nectar and honey ally themselves with apple vanilla flowers and citrus in a colorful reflection of a great Mosel site. There is such intensity and diversity of fruit in the finish that one cannot really talk about subtlety but one can certainly talk about a superb ageworthy Riesling. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The Selbachs "two star" 2005 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese** is their one Auslese of the vintage that was truly selectively picked by bunch or partial bunch over a wide range of parcels. The nose displays a dusty pungency of advanced botrytis, along with brown-spiced, dried apple. Dense and surprisingly firm in feel on the palate with dried apple, white raisin, smoked meat, brown spices, and honey, this take-no-prisoners botrytis wine is awesomely - almost frighteningly - intense in the finish. This wine is having nothing to do with the elegance, refinement, and lift shared by so many 2005s. Here is how I imagine a young 1976 Beerenauslese having tasted ... provided it had received several surplus grams of tartaric acid! It challenges one to consider long aging - perhaps even four decades - but I would want to make another short-term reassessment before committing. erobertparker.com, #169 Feb 2007, David Schildknecht

A Riesling wine from Mosel Saar Ruwer in Germany. 2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese 750ml

The 2005 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese offers an aromatic juxtaposition of grapefruit lime and pineapple with toasted nuts and a nippy note of botrytis pungency. Tightly compressed and firm on the palate it blazes in the back end with citrus and honey underlain by toasted nuts and wet stone. This needs time I suspect to fully express itself and would I am sure benefit from aging for two to three decades. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
