  The Seghesio Family Vineyards have a rich history, dating back to 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela purchased their home in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. They didn’t buy the land for the house - they bought it for the 56 acres that were ideal vineyard land. That year, the land’s first grapes were planted - Zinfandel. In 1902, Seghesio Winery was founded, but the Seghesios didn’t stop there. In 1910 they acquired even more land, in the region known as Chianti, California. On that land, they planed Sangiovese, Canielao Nero, Trebbiano and Malvasia, making the it the oldest planting of Sangiovese in North America. Six months before Prohibition, Seghesio took a gamble and made a significant purchase - a 4,000,000 gallon capacity winery with 1,100 acres of vineyards from his former employer, Italian Swiss Colony. Unfortunately, Prohibition hit harder than Seghesio expected, and he was forced to completely sell off his shares in the winery by 1933. In 1983, the company changed drastically, when Ted and Peter Seghesio decided to shift the winery’s focus to high-quality production and much smaller lots, producing wine under the Seghesio label for the first time. Ted became the both the winemaker and the deliverer of wine, and with the help of Peter, a successful distribution network was formed. After tending to over 400 acres of vineyards across many regions, Seghesio Family Vineyards has become a large, successful vineyard with fourth generation winemakers. Read less

Creamy cherry fruit is joined by a nice spicy note on the nose offering just a hint of wood and a little blueberry. Full and fruity in the mouth delivering clear black berry fruit with soft tannins though this turns a touch bitter and extracted on the backend, then a little creamy on the raw, modest finish. Perhaps a bit young. Might improve. 87pts

As usual this was excellent. Brambly blackberry, anise, currant, some chocolate with chewy tannins and refreshing acidity lead to a long, healthy aftertaste. Drink or hold (18-24 mths) Paul 91 points

Nice blend of fruit--raspberries, plums. Maybe just a tad fruitier than I prefer, but this will appeal to many. Very tame tannin and very light on the acid suggests to me that this is a drink-it-now.

Big, juicy Rockpile zin by Seghesio. Black cherry and black licorice on the nose. Loads of ripe black cherry, blackberry, black plum, more licorice/anise, some earthiness, nice acidity, fine grained tannins and a medium long finish.

Red fruit and a bit of alcohol on the nose. Red fruit on the palate with some spice and balancing acid. Soft tannins and a smooth finish. The second day the wine developed a bit more fruit and the tannins softened. I upgraded my star count a half point. Really nice wine.

Very dark "black plum" color in the glass. Oaky nose with slight hints of blackberries. Lots of fruit on the initial palate--blackberries and raisins (giving it sweetness). Fairly stern as it moves over the palate--some tannin and some acid. OK wine, but not my favorite from this maker. US$19.99 from the Wine Club in Santa Ana.

Fairly dark purply color. Somewhat woody nose with a slight astringency that suggests alcohol. Fairly fruity on introduction to the palate—blackberry and, maybe some citrus. Acid hit gives the citrus impression but it might also be compared to stone fruit—plum or peach. Some suggestion of spice—clove. Very warm finish, but, to the detriment of this wine, the final impression is fruity sweetness.

This is a remarkably well-balanced and easy drinking wine; a California "fruit-bomb" with depth. Typical Zinfandel brambleberry shines through with subdued tannins. Perhaps not the most thoughtful of drinkers, but if you're in the mood for an easy-drinker that doesn't sacrifice on elegance it's a great bottle.

VINEYARDS: A blend comprised of Zinfandel from vineyards in Dry Creek and Alexander valleys. VINTAGE: 2015 was one of the earliest harvests on record in Sonoma County. Although the summer was generally mild, spring’s dry warm weather accelerated vine development, ultimately producing smaller berries and concentrated flavors. Sustained warm weather coupled with depleted water reserves culminated with a furiously paced compact harvest that was completed before the end of September, producing a vintage of exceptional quality. VINEYARD REGIMEN: Aggressive hand canopy management was maintained throughout the season. Yield management techniques were employed to ensure even ripening and to keep crop loads in balance. FERMENTATION REGIMEN: 60% pump-over fermentation in closed-top stainless steel with delestage through tub and screen; 20% small, open-top fermentation with hand punch-down cap management; 20% stainless steel rotary tank fermentation. Fermented on the skins from 7 to 12 days before being transferred to barrels to complete malolactic fermentation. TASTING NOTES: Spicy, lush black fruit of Alexander Valley Briary and raspberry flavors, along with structure, of cooler Dry Creek Valley Balanced and elegantly structured FOOD AFFINITIES: Red sauces, pizza, barbecue, spicy cuisine and cured salami VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 85% Zinfandel 9% Petite Sirah 3% Carignane 3% Syrah BARREL REGIMEN: Aged 9 months in 60% American oak barrels (12% new); 40% neutral French and Hungarian oak barrels (neutral) ALCOHOL: 14.8%

Each vintage, we harvest multiple diverse lots of Zinfandel that span the entire Sonoma County Zinfandel landscape. Each of these lots is produced under the careful eye of our winemaker, Ted Seghesio. The best of these lots are selected to make Sonoma Zinfandel. A small amount of Petite Sirah is added to honor century old traditions and to provide color and structure. The result is a wine that offers tantalizing raspberry, blueberry, classic briary and spicy flavors with a balance of components for which Seghesio wines are known. - Winery

Producing great Zin is what Seghesio is all about. The winery was founded in the late 1800's and their old vine vineyards are legendary in Sonoma. Always bold and expressive, Seghesio's Sonoma County Zinfandel is a blend of grapes from all of their estate vineyards in Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys, many of them from very old vine sources up to 100 years old, along with younger vines that were planted with very select clones best suited for their microclimate. This 2014 is a blend of 88% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 2% Carignane and 2% Syrah aged 9 months in a combination of American, French and Hungarian oak barrels, 14% new. Wine Spectator scored this zesty Zin 93 "Plump and luscious, this is jam-packed with fruit. Lively blackberry, pepper and other spice box aromas lead to ripe and rich flavors of black raspberry, caramel and licorice. There are more complex Zinfandels, but few that are more enjoyable to drink. Drink now through 2022."

Since Edoardo Seghesio’ s first planting of Zinfandel in Sonoma County in 1895, Seghesio Family Vineyards has sought out sites that showcase Sonoma as the world’s premier appellation for Zinfandel. Rockpile, a narrow ridge 1,200 feet above Dry Creek Valley, is just one of those areas. Steep, well-drained hillsides with shallow, rocky topsoil provide for less-vigorous vines, smaller berries and intensely flavored Zinfandel. TASTING NOTES: Aromas of spice box and red fruit Intense flavors of currant, candied apple and Zinfandel’s briary essence Soft entry with focused acidity and an extremely long finish FOOD AFFINITIES: Hearty beef, spicy red sauce pasta and dry-rubbed barbecue - Winery Vineyard Regime: Our standard farming protocol was performed: shoot suckering, multiple canopy leafing passes, weak shoot fruit removal, removal of all touching clusters, veraison thinning and post-veraison touch-up pass. Fermentation Regime: 69% small, open-top fermentation with punch-down maceration by hand 10 to 11 days; 31% closed-top fermentation with remontage (pumpover) and delestage (rack and return), which lasted 9 days. All wines completed primary fermentation and underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wines were assembled after 12 months of aging and returned to barrel for 3 months to coalesce. Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel blends the finest lots from vineyards planted between 1920-1950 on the benchlands of Dry Creek and western Alexander Valleys. Although "Old Vine" is often loosely interpreted in the wine industry, the benchmark here is a minimum of 50 years. True "Old Vine" Zin is distinguished by dry-farmed, thick, gnarled trunks and planted with historic clones dating back to the years before Prohibition. In each of these old blocks, vines of Carignane and/or Petite Sirah are inter-planted, as was typical of the era. The small concentrated berries these old vines produce are fermented in small open-top barrels and then aged in primarily French oak barrels for 15 months. Robert Parker scored it 92 and the Wine Spectator gave it a "Highly Recommended" with a 93 point score. They said "A winning combination of rustic richness and sleek balance. Aromas of briary wild berry and spicy mocha lead to dense, layered flavors of black cherry, grilled anise and pepper. Drink now through 2022."

Wild berry patch aromas and scents of freshly baked bread. Desired varietal markers of raspberries, blackberries and Zin's briary spiciness reflect in this wine. Zin's ever-present acidity enhances the finish and fine, dusty tannins add complexity, mouthfeel and structure. Layered nuances of flavor with cracked pepper, tilled soil and a hint of creamy oak. Characteristic synergy of components - balanced and elegantly structured.
