What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

The 2004 Zinfandel Old Vine (92% Zinfandel and the rest Petite Sirah and Carignan) is from a vineyard planted in the late 1800s. Tangy and edgy, it reveals loads of peppery, spicy, briery, black cherry, and raspberry fruit with hints of pepper and earth, vibrant acidity, medium to full body, and a high-toned personality. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. ~ The Wine Advocate Warm climate fruit delivers a rich mouth feel with sufficient acidity to frame the ripe black raspberry and cherry flavors without losing its aromatic freshness. Food Affinities: Beef, pasta with red sauce, barbecue, spicy cuisine

This was a hot, alchoholic wine with a strongly alcoholic nose and finish. After 30 minutes in the glass it was possible to discern black cherry flavors on the palate, and a faint black raspberry aroma. It lacked the plushness of the zins I liked, and tasted almost thin.

This is a great all-around zin that you can feel comfortable serving at a dinner party. Interesting and peppery, and a very consistent wine from year to year.

Very good zin and aging well. Red fruit, eucalyptus, cedar and very subtle tennins and spice.

Tannic in the nose, but much less so in the mouth. Dry, with a touch of olives. Needed a few minutes to breath, even this young, but it has a nice spread and is great with red meat.

A nice example of Seghesio's Old Vine Zinfandel: fruit forward with big , rich blackberry and a nice, not-overpowering peppery spice. We sampled this vintage at a tasting and look forward to pairing it with a meal.
