This was rated #10 of the top 100 wines of 2008 by 'winedictator' (93 pts) .Rasberries and plums and light vanilla and strawberry candy. Complex , supple wine, starts with warm deep berry flavours, followed by a slightly alcholic burst of cherry/plum fruit and moderate tannins that lightly pluck at your cheeks. Finishes niicely with a faint peppery spice note that lingers. Keeps pace with zinfandels twice the price.

I absolutely loved this one. Big, bold, and complex. This is pretty much my favorite wine right now.

Balanced, opulent and smooth. Spice and red berries. Full bodied with a medium finish.

Dark red, almost purple in the glass. The nose, a little hot, shows spicy red fruit , lead pencil, cedar and with a little more time the red fruit turns to raspberry jam... but one of the best you've ever smelled. On the palate you taste sweet wild berries, cherry cough syrup and oak. Not a lot of varietal character from this glass but great anyway. Long sweet red berry finish. (Gave it an hour opened in bottle before drinking.)

The deep plum/ruby-colored 2002 Zinfandel Old Vine (16.6% alcohol) boasts loads of fruit in addition to a big, spicy nose of composty notes intermixed with black cherries, raspberries, pepper, and herbs. Drink this full-bodied, rich, dense, delicious 2002 over the next 3-4 years.

#10 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines of 2008.

If you love the regular Sonoma Zin from Seghesio, it's time to try the old vine. The wine is dark, inky, and concentrated. Leathery notes mingle with plush fruits resulting in a complex, satisfying bottle.

Well-defined berryish fruit is the centerpiece in both the outgoing aromas and the full fleshy flavors of this weighty effort yet for all of its volume and richness it stays nicely on the varietal track with its background notes of dry spices and briar. It is youthfully exuberant and somewhat juicy in character and it will be at its best in service with savory roasts of pork marinated in brine and basted with young port. WS.

Briary and appealingly rustic, with wild berry, toasty sage and earthy mineral aromas plus flavors that are tightly wound, with lively acidity. Firm tannins. Needs time. Best from 2012 through 2016.

Complex aromas of earth, wild berry, anise and cedar are taut and focused on the palate, with crisp acidity and tannins and a long aftertaste. Drink now.

The 2007 Zinfandel Old Vine (a selection from the oldest vineyards) reveals a dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a floral, blueberry and black raspberry-scented nose, a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel, and serious tannin in the background. Textured, rich, and long with considerable upside, it can be drunk now or cellared for a decade.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Seghesio family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel. Edoardo Seghesio planted Zinfandel on the family’s Home Ranch in the Alexander Valley in 1895. Today his grandchildren share his passion as they farm over 80 hectares of Zinfandel in Alexander and Dry Creek Valley. This wine originates from sites that have produced Zinfandel for a century, as well as newer vineyards planted with the best clones and benefiting from the most advanced viticultural practices. This Zinfandel has aromas of fresh ripe raspberries and blueberries intertwined with briar patch spices. On the palate flavours of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries persist with notes of creamy oak. A silky and refined texture with juicy acidity and smooth, integrated tannins.
