Seghesio Family Vineyards:
The Seghesio Family Vineyards have a rich history, dating back to 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela purchased their home in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County.   The Seghesio Family Vineyards have a rich history, dating back to 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela purchased their home in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. They didn’t buy the land for the house - they bought it for the 56 acres that were ideal vineyard land. That year, the land’s first grapes were planted - Zinfandel. In 1902, Seghesio Winery was founded, but the Seghesios didn’t stop there. In 1910 they acquired even more land, in the region known as Chianti, California. On that land, they planed Sangiovese, Canielao Nero, Trebbiano and Malvasia, making the it the oldest planting of Sangiovese in North America. Six months before Prohibition, Seghesio took a gamble and made a significant purchase - a 4,000,000 gallon capacity winery with 1,100 acres of vineyards from his former employer, Italian Swiss Colony. Unfortunately, Prohibition hit harder than Seghesio expected, and he was forced to completely sell off his shares in the winery by 1933. In 1983, the company changed drastically, when Ted and Peter Seghesio decided to shift the winery’s focus to high-quality production and much smaller lots, producing wine under the Seghesio label for the first time. Ted became the both the winemaker and the deliverer of wine, and with the help of Peter, a successful distribution network was formed. After tending to over 400 acres of vineyards across many regions, Seghesio Family Vineyards has become a large, successful vineyard with fourth generation winemakers. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

[Stromboli] As others have noted some bottle variation. Not surprising considering production. This was off.

This wine introduced me to the world of wine; I loved it all around and still pick up bottles of other vintages for a special treat--however of course none can compare to my first.

Lately I have been fortunate to acquire Wine collections from storage locker sales. Yes I know it's a dirty job but some one has to drink all that wine so it doesn't go to waste. The bottle had been well stored and in a cool environment. I opened it on the spot to a mouth full of fruity berry flavors and the mellowness was exquisite. Just a little note; after day one day, day two leftovers were not quite as smooth but still enjoyable. This was one of the best Zins I have tasted. Still good after all these years.

Firm, tight and concentrated, with a rich beam of complex raspberry, blackberry, wild berry and floral scents and flavors, yet it has a great backbone of acidity and tannina, and the flavors push through on the finish. Drink now through 2008.

All five Seghesio Zinfandel bottlings from the 2002 vintage are remarkable efforts, but this one is the most widely available and offers the best value. Winemaker Tag Seghesio made this wine from grapes grown on estate vineyards in Sonomarsquo;s Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. It is aged in a mix of French and American oak for a year.

The deep plum/ruby-colored 2002 Zinfandel Old Vine (16.6% alcohol) boasts loads of fruit in addition to a big, spicy nose of composty notes intermixed with black cherries, raspberries, pepper, and herbs. Drink this full-bodied, rich, dense, delicious 2002 over the next 3ndash;4 years.

Wonderful balance and sense of elegance, it offers vivid ripe fruit flavors that are rich and complex, with spicy black cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, herb and sage notes that add flavor dimensions and complexity. Firm, but ripe tannins add structure, allowing the fruit to push through. Drink now through 2009.
