Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vine 2011
Editorial Reviews for Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Old Vine
Blueberry, This is clear and mineral on the nose, chalky earthy, and balsamic with wild berry and blueberry aromas. On the palate this is relatively light and elegant with fresh, gorgeous red currant, sour cherry and blueberry flavors. It’s a gorgeous wine, lively and bright with a fine inherent spice note leading to a clear, long pure fruit finish. So transparent and detailed for a wine this size. 94pts
Lotsa Zin notes on the nose--brambly. Very pleasant initial palate sensation--neutral on the tip of the tongue, but fruit emerges around the edges, blackberry and, maybe, plum. Tannin enough to suggest that it would benefit from aging, but very pleasant now. US$19.99 at Wine Club in Santa Ana
Briary nose with lots of sage. Tad stemmy and woody. Flavors of strawberry and black cherry with pepper and spice box. Medium to full bodied, dense and rustic style. Zesty, but well balanced. Rich fruit without being jammy. 90 pts. 12/29/12
I just =really like this zinfandel. not the big vanilla tastes of other zins...but smooth and not overly tannic.

Wild berry patch aromas and scents of freshly baked bread. Desired varietal markers of raspberries, blackberries and Zin's briary spiciness reflect in this wine. Zin's ever-present acidity enhances the finish and fine, dusty tannins add complexity, mouthfeel and structure. Layered nuances of flavor with cracked pepper, tilled soil and a hint of creamy oak. Characteristic synergy of components - balanced and elegantly structured.

Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel blends the finest lots from vineyards planted between 1920-1950 on the benchlands of Dry Creek and western Alexander Valleys. Although "Old Vine" is often loosely interpreted in the wine industry, the benchmark here is fifty years. True "Old Vine" Zin is distinguished by dry-farmed, thick, gnarled trunks and planted with historic clones dating back to the years before Prohibition. In each of these old blocks, vines of Carignane and/or Petite Sirah are inter-planted, as was typical of the era. The small concentrated berries these old vines produce are fermented in small open-top barrels and then aged in primarily French oak barrels for 15 months. This 2011 scored 92 in Decanter Magazine and 92 points from the Wine Spectator who said "Densely structured and full of character, with bold cherry and licorice aromas and layered flavors of savory plum, grilled herb and Asian spice. The finish is framed by ripe but big tannins."
