Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Home Ranch 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Soft cafe au lait oak nose, features a hint of caramel and smoke layered over dark plummy, chocolate tinged fruit. The nose here is just a hint porty and pruny. Soft, broad and old viney in the mouth with nice clarity to the fresh blackberry black raspberry fruit. This picks up a savory, vegetal note on the mid-palate that gets covered with clear and creamy fruit on the long finish. This is a bit dense and chewy in the mouth with very ripe tannins offering some support. 91pts

The Seghesio Family Vineyards have a rich history, dating back to 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio and his wife Angela purchased their home in Alexander Valley, part of Sonoma County. They didn’t buy the land for the house - they bought it for the 56 acres that were ideal vineyard land. That year, the land’s first grapes were planted - Zinfandel. In 1902, Seghesio Winery was founded, but the Seghesios didn’t stop there. In 1910 they acquired even more land, in the region known as Chianti, California. On that land, they planed Sangiovese, Canielao Nero, Trebbiano and Malvasia, making the it the oldest planting of Sangiovese in North America. Six months before Prohibition, Seghesio took a gamble and made a significant purchase - a 4,000,000 gallon capacity winery with 1,100 acres of vineyards from his former employer, Italian Swiss Colony. Unfortunately, Prohibition hit harder than Seghesio expected, and he was forced to completely sell off his shares in the winery by 1933. In 1983, the company changed drastically, when Ted and Peter Seghesio decided to shift the winery’s focus to high-quality production and much smaller lots, producing wine under the Seghesio label for the first time. Ted became the both the winemaker and the deliverer of wine, and with the help of Peter, a successful distribution network was formed. After tending to over 400 acres of vineyards across many regions, Seghesio Family Vineyards has become a large, successful vineyard with fourth generation winemakers. Read less

Big nose with lots of berry fruit and bramble. Big fruit on the tongue/palate—black raspberry, blueberry—but not syrupy. Well-structured multi-faceted wine. Fruit is modulated by woodiness and drying tannins. Then I realize that the acid makes me want to take another sip. Darned good wine that meets my expectation for a Seghesio.

The 2009 vintage doesn't match up well with 2008. This wine is too acidic and thus the tannins are not as balanced. The fruit aroma and flavor are reminiscent of the 2008 vintage, but pale in comparison. I'm not convinced that aging will bring this wine up to the 2008 quality. Disappointing, but I'll be cracking open a bottle of their Ranch Zinfandel soon, and I expect a much better experience.

Just had this wine at a tasting and it was flying out of the store. Much better than the 08 and seemed smoother than the 07 in a head-to-head today. Round with no harsh notes.

Producing great Zin is what Seghesio is all about. The winery was founded in the late 1800's and the Home Ranch was first planted in 1895. Now these ancient, head-pruned vines offer very low yields of intensely flavored grapes. Fermented in temperature controlled tanks over 8-12 days and lots fermented separately. 9% Petite Sirah which also grows there is blended in. The wine aged 14 months in 75% French oak and 25% American oak; 20% new barrels. Wine Spectator scored this 94 points saying "Gushes with rich and powerful fruit, offering aromas of wild berry, nutmeg and cinnamon, and complex flavors of cherry pie, white pepper and licorice. A great package. Drink now through 2023."

Our family roots are firmly planted in Zinfandel as our Great-Grandfather, Edoardo Seghesio, first planted Zinfandel on our Alexander Valley Home Ranch in 1895. Today, we share his passion as we farm over 400 acres of estate Zinfandel in the worlds best growing regions for the grape --- Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. This wine combines sites that have produced Zinfandel for over a century with newer sites that utilize proprietary clones and the most advanced viticultural practices.

A Zinfandel that has it all—rich, ripe flavors, good structure and acidity, and lots of personality. Offers aromas of cherry pie and licorice that lead to complex flavors of huckleberry, toasty vanilla and smoky cracked pepper. Drink now through 2017.
