What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

In 1895, Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vineyard in America to Zinfandel. Today, four generations of grape growers later, half of the Seghesio family's 400 acres of vineyard are planted to Zinfandel. The Seghesio family’s benchmark is 60 years old and above, while the average age of the vines used for the ‘Old Vine’ Zinfandel is 90 years old. Excellent Zinfandel. Very fruity taste, full flavor yet very smooth. My wife, not a big Zin fan, really liked this too.

Really good zin that is full-bodied and has a slight tar taste like a lot of the CC County zins.

A classic Segehsio Zin: lush, smooth, fruity, long finish.

Incomplete finish, but overall good wine. I would pair this with food always.

A favorite of all red wine drinkers at our gathering. It was Greg's preferred wine. Nice structure with ample tannins, flavors come through nicely.

It just wouldn't be summer without a good Zinfandel to accompany barbequed beef. The Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel 2005 is the under-$20 Zin I've been pining for over the last few months.

This is a terrific wine, with a big, Zinny nose, a full-bodied, dark brambly fruit palate, and a peppery but smooth finish with no unpleasant heat despite its 15.2 percent alcohol content. If you're looking for a satisfying Zin at a reasonable price, this will be a tough one to beat.

Here's a shopping tip: Seghesio's Zins are all similarly labeled, but with different read more...
