User Reviews for Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Alexander Valley Home Ranch
Add your reviewThe 2009 vintage doesn't match up well with 2008. This wine is too acidic and thus the tannins are not as balanced. The fruit aroma and flavor are reminiscent of the 2008 vintage, but pale in comparison. I'm not convinced that aging will bring this wine up to the 2008 quality. Disappointing, but I'll be cracking open a bottle of their Ranch Zinfandel soon, and I expect a much better experience.
Just had this wine at a tasting and it was flying out of the store. Much better than the 08 and seemed smoother than the 07 in a head-to-head today. Round with no harsh notes.
This is my favorite Home Ranch Zinfandel yet, and that is saying something since it is, year in and year out, my favorite of the Seghesio Zins. Silky and refined yet powerful and classically structured, this wine is already sensational. Deep, ripe, spicy, lip-smacking berry, cassis, and plum fruit flavors cascade over the taste buds seamlessly from start to finish, and there's even a subtle lead-pencil component there for added complexity. Magnificent Zinfandel.

Blackberry, raspberry and other brambly fruit characteristic of Alexander Valley. 'Graham crust' undertones typical of our Home Ranch terroir. Subtle hints of oak, briary acidity and soft, ripe fruit tannins.

Layered bright fruit flavors reminiscent of a rich berry pie with a toasted crust. Old vine Zinfandel s complex spice undertones. Low yields in the vineyard preserved the vibrant natural acidity and balanced tannins. Long, persistent finish.
Subtle hints of oak, briary acidity and the soft, ripe fruit tannins that will come to embody the 2009 vintage. Could it be that we've finally found a way to bottle Ed Seghesio s famed marionberry and vanilla ice cream dessert?!
"Wild berry patch aromas and scents of freshly baked bread. Desired varietal markers of raspberries
Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel blends the finest lots from vineyards planted between 1920-1950 on the benchlands of Dry Creek and western Alexander Valleys. Although "Old Vine" is often loosely interpreted in the wine industry, the benchmark here is fifty years. True "Old Vine" Zin is distinguished by dry-farmed, thick, gnarled trunks and planted with historic clones dating back to the years before Prohibition. In each of these old blocks, vines of Carignane and/or Petite Sirah are inter-planted, as was typical of the era. The small concentrated berries these old vines produce are fermented in small open-top barrels and then aged in primarily French oak barrels for 15 months. This 2009 is an Editors Choice with a 94 point score in Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "As chewy and umami, salty delicious as a mouthful of crunchy bacon. Throw in dried blackberries and blueberries, with a touch of smoky new oak, and that describes this fantastically pure, addictively good Zinfandel. The grape sourcing is from old vineyards in the Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. Truly a great Zin" Limited!
Producing great Zin is what Seghesio is all about. The winery was founded in the late 1800's and their old vine vineyards are legendary in Sonoma. Always bold and expressive, Seghesio's Sonoma County Zinfandel is a blend of grapes from all of their estate vineyards in Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys, many of them from very old vine sources up to 100 years old, along with younger vines that were planted with very select clones best suited for their microclimate. Ripe and compelling this wine scored 90 points with the Wine Spectator who said "Bold aromas of briary wild berry and cracked pepper lead to plush, layered flavors of black raspberry, toasty sage and espresso that finish with zesty tannins. Drink now through 2016."
Winemaker's Notes:
Not yet reviewed; 2009 vintage rated 95 points by Wine Spectator: A Zinfandel that has it all--rich, ripe flavors, good structure and acidity, and lots of personality. Offers aromas of cherry pie and licorice that lead to complex flavors of huckleberry, toasty vanilla and smoky cracked pepper. Drink now through 2017.
