Bright, full ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry, blueberry and bitter chocolate. Rich, deep and rather powerful (14.5% alcohol), with superb sweetness to its strong fruit. A major mouthful of sweet, ripe barbera but with enough acidity to give life to its lush texture.
Edoardo Seghesio immigrated to America in 1886 from the Piedmonte region of Italy, home to Barbera. In California, while Barbera has been grown for over a century, it has only recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Barbera is ideally suited to California's growing conditions. The heat and lack of rain provide intense flavors and extended hang time for Barbera's classic acidity to achieve balance.
Barbera, the harvest extender, ripens late. Picking grapes well into November is risky, but to achieve optimum ripeness, patience is required. Barbera's natural acidity, high even when the fruit is ripe, provides structure and lengthens the flavors. This wine's seductive blackberry, cherry and dried rose qualities combine with French oak's spicy, smoky nuances to create this rich rendition.
