Edoardo Seghesio first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800s during his time as winemaker at an Italian Swiss colony. His Sangiovese plantings on the Home Ranch vineyard are the oldest in America, dating back to 1910. They are also the source of four unique clones for Seghesio’s subsequent plantings of the varietal. Although Sangiovese typically grows vigorously, the low yielding, shallow soils of the Home Ranch Vineyard, combined with the small berries of the four clones used, result in wines of intense varietal character. This Barbera has aromas and flavours of dark fruit, including black cherry, raspberry and black plum There are notes of lavender, sage and anise, with a mid-palate rush of fruit and spice. For a Barbera this vintage has a velvety richness, while the acidity and Tannins complement and add fullness. The French Oak seasoning provides vanilla, clove and cinnamon essences.
