What to Expect

Barbera is one of the classic Grapes of Italy's Piedmont region, though it is popular throughout much of Northwest Italy and has gained a following in California. Searing acidity has been a trait of Barbera though modern viticultural techniques and warmer regions have tamed the acidity, resulting in medium-bodied wines with bright, red fruit tones that feature hints of violets, earth and plum with just a whisper of tannin.

Winemakers Notes

Edoardo Seghesio first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800s during his time as winemaker at an Italian Swiss colony. His Sangiovese plantings on the Home Ranch vineyard are the oldest in America, dating back to 1910. They are also the source of four unique clones for Seghesio’s subsequent plantings of the varietal. Although Sangiovese typically grows vigorously, the low yielding, shallow soils of the Home Ranch Vineyard, combined with the small berries of the four clones used, result in wines of intense varietal character. If you like Zinfandels this is the best one from a company that specializes in zinfandels. I just went to their wine tasting where the CEO presented five of his zinfandels to us and this was my favorite.
