Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery Secolo Red Sonoma County 2008

Member Review by Jon of Sonoma:

This is a very non-memorable pinot noir, it has no distinguishing tastes or aroma. I will never buy another bottle of it, it was not bad but it was not great either.

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Strong cherry notes with a toasted oak finish. Velvety body. Excellent compliment to pasta, beef stew or even chili. While it isn't multi faceted in flavor it is an excellent example of a California Pinot Noir. We bought ours from the Wall Street Journal wine club so it was a great value as well.

The 2006 Secolo has aromatics of blackberries and black cherries, along with plum and blueberry notes from the Merlot. It also has mocha and truffle-like oak aromas and flavors. The mouth is surprisingly elegant considering the vintage with rich, black cherry fruit layered with dried herbs, cigar-box and sandalwood. It has just enough tannins and acidity to frame in the fruit. The 2006 Secolo has great balance and although having slight astringency in it's youth, it can be enjoyed right now with marbled steaks and savory stews.

This wine has a beautiful medium to dark garnet color with dried cherry, strawberry compote, vanilla and mocha aromatics. The flavor is balanced between juicy, cherry like fruit and toasted oak. This Pinot has finesse and finishes with lively acidity, firm tannins and well-integrated oak. It is the most Burgundian Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir we have made to date, with excellent aging potential.

Meaning “century” in Italian, Secolo is a Bordeaux-style blended red wine. This wine showcases some of the best vineyard lots for Bordeaux varietals in Sonoma County. In 2006 was a cooler, longer vintage for Sonoma County, with elevated tannins, but good varietal Cabernet and Merlot flavors.
