With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. This opens with notes of vanilla, toasted coconut and toasted almond over dusty black berry fruits with a hint of eucalyptus adding complexity. Very smooth an entry with well-managed tannins just floating beneath the surface of the rich, black currant and black cherry fruit. The tannin tightens up a bit on the mid-palate but this wine remains supple and rich right through the medium length finish. On the back end, and the finish particularly, this picks up nice notes of bitterest chocolate and a redder fruit profile. This is a bit of a throw back style of wine, and as such is very satisfying. 89pts

Firm and tight, this is brawnier than usual, with juicy black cherry, wild berry, cedar, spice and mineral notes that are dense and chewy, with rich tannins. Drink now through 2012.

Shows aromas of mineral, pebble, black currant and dill. Tight and intense on the palate, turning complex and ending with chewy tannins. Best from 2009 through 2012. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Fruit is the star in this Bordeaux blend that offers a wealth of date nut raisin bread, cola, milk chocolate, cherry pie filling and orange marmalade flavors that finish dry and balanced. This is definitely one for early consumption.

A seductive style, ripe, rich and creamy, both in flavor and texture, with layers of currant, wild berry, plum and blackberry. The finish picks up chocolaty mocha notes and ends with a long, polished aftertaste. Drink now through 2011.

An elegant style, with supple flavors layered underneath ripe currant, plum and black cherry fruit that's intense, concentrated, full-bodied and balanced, finishing with fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2017.

Some fruit emerges out of the jumble of dark aromas, from iodine to molasses and oak. Once the cherries are unleashed, they come on strong with firm flesh and black cherry skin flavors. This is a black wine with a lot of fruit, needing time to settle into its warmth. And it seems to express the Alexander Valley in a lean elegance and a firm grip.

Herersquo;s a classic Alexander Valley Cab from a winery that knows what itrsquo;s doing. The wine is very soft but complex and elaborately tailored, with delicious blackberry pie, chocolate and cherry flavors that just donrsquo;t stop coming. Fortunately, the tannins and acids are rich enough to stand up to the fruit.
