Sebastiani Sonoma County Zinfandel 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Wow, was this a ripe vintage! Before your nose even makes it to the glass, you can smell the jammy raspberry fruit. The oak component offers inviting vanilla and beeswax aromas in the nose as well. In the mouth, there is expansive wild berry and raspberry flavors. While from a hot vintage, this wine is exceedingly sleek and feminine. Racy white pepper and oriental spice flavors linger on the finish, and it has a pleasantly low alcohol level. This well-balanced wine can be enjoyed with a wide variety of Italian dishes, soups, ribs, stews and cassoulets.

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. I didn't really like this, though my fiance did. It was way too bitter for my tastes.

After your eyes take in the dark ruby color, your nose will delight in the raspberry and cranberry fruit aromas. The flavor offers pure raspberry fruit and nuances of cedar and vanilla oak. This wine is exceedingly elegant, and the lower alcohol level allows the purity of fruit to shine through. It is enjoyable in its youth, yet has enough structure to make it ageworthy.

Dark ruby in color with explosive cranberry and raspberry fruit aromas and flavors. Complex spice is evident on the aroma. The wine is framed with smoky and vanilla oak.

Appealing if a bit rustic, with roasted sage and wild berry aromas and zesty yet tightly wound black cherry, cedar and forest flavors. Tannins grip the finish. Drink now through 2010.

Sebastiani creates user-friendly wines, and the Zinfandel is a prime example: juicy raspberry and blackberry flavors are accentuated by spicy pepper and chai tea notes. Smooth and soft, it's quaffably delicious!

Aromas of raspberry and brown sugar, mixed with vanilla are detected in the nose. Raspberry fruit creeps over the tongue, followed by hints of herbs de Provence and a soft, pleasant, oaky finish.
