Sebastiani Russian River Pinot Noir 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Sebastiani Russian River Pinot Noir A classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, with the appellations signature cherry-cola aromas and bright ruby color. The tannins are fine grained and velvety, balanced by a sour cherry acidity and fresh fruit notes of plum, raspberry, Marion berry and cherries. Sweet oak spices of cinnamon and vanilla round out the finish, which lingers on the palate. 088232005017

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. I first tasted this wine on my 5th wedding anniversary. I paired it with a pistachio-crusted lamb chops and a duck paté. To both me and my husband, this wine was the most perfect glass of wine we had ever tasted. We savored every drop with our dinner. Amazing, smooth, fruity and just an all-around great wine for any palate. We loved it! The price of the bottle of wine from a supermarket is not bad considering our 5 star dinner cost $110.00 for two people! Excellent.

Plenty of vanilla and cedary oak to overcome, but the ripe plum and black cherry flavors are up to the task. A hint of lavender and nutmeg adds a tasty dimension, and it's hard to find a better value in Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2007.

This is Syrah-like Pinot, rather heavy, but good. It's full-bodied, with good tannins and acids and is balanced and dry, with a touch of oak. Certainly shows off its California sunshine in the sweet finish, which is a swirl of cherries, blackberries and raspberries.

Rather light in fruit, with sour cherry, tomato and rhubarb flavors. One taster found the polished texture and spicy finish pleasing.

Pinots in this price range can be risky, but this one represents a good investment. It's got real Sonoma personality in the silky texture, crisp coastal acids, and raspberry, cherry, vanilla and cola flavors.

Black cherry is the strongest flavor, with black tea adding yet another element to this great wine. A hint of cola comes through on the soft and pleasing finish.

Pale ruby in color, with aromas of strawberry and vanilla. This is a tasty Pinot Noir, medium in body, with balanced acidity and soft tannins. Would be a great accompaniment to a cherry-glazed roast ham with baked sweet potatoes.

Sebastiani has had good results with their Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and this bottling continues that tradition. It's a lovely wine, dry and rich, with raspberry and cherry pie, sweet, smoky oak and spice flavors, brightened with fine acidity. A wonderful wine for restaurants at a price that's affordable.
