What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. Located in the northern reaches of the Alexander Valley, the Lyon Vineyard, owned by winemaker Mark Lyon, forms the core of this wine, supplying the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. WE 90pts. - Winemaker Notes - This Merlot is dark crimson in color with glints of violet and ruby. The aromas display black tea, black cherry, fresh blackberry and a hint of rose petal. The extended oak aging lends notes of espresso, dark chocolate and cinnamon. The long, even ripening helped create very fine-grained tannins that are coating, yet velvety, and perfectly balanced by the juicy berry fruit and sour cherry acidity. Elegant and refined, this is a wine to drink now with BBQ tri-tip or roast pork Alternatively, because it is structured like the Merlots from Pomerol, it is able to age for read more...

76% Merlot, 15.5% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, 1.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The dark crimson color hints at the richness of this wine. The aromas reflect the terroir nicely with black cherry and blackberry fruit. There are elements of cigar box in the nose also, due to the oak regime. The flavors showcase the warm vintage - it is a plumby Merlot fruit bomb, without raisiny, dried-out fruit. The Petit Verdot and Malbec contribute structure, color and lots of black fruit qualities. Enjoy with aged steaks, grilled lamb or Coq au Vin.
