Sebastiani Merlot 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Aromatically speaking, our 2008 combines black cherries, black tea, vanilla, mocha and plums. The palate is rich, soft and approachable with layers of dried herbs, ripe fruit and vanilla. Balanced, elegant and delicious, this is exactly what we look for in Sonoma County Merlot. Enjoy this wine alongside a wide array of dishes, including pasta primavera, salami, grilled steak and herb-crusted lamb chops.

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. One of my Top 10 Merlot picks under $15 a bottle from 2008. In my glass, this Merlot was a nice, deep garnet color. A wonderful nose of ripe plum, cinnamon spice, blackberry, and red licorice. The mouth feel was full bodied, soft, and rich. Flavors of ripe plum, black cherry, cocoa, and vanilla. On my second taste, more pronounced vanilla, herb, and dried red fruits led to a long, flavorful finish. A great wine to pair with grilled steak, barbecued pork, pasta with tomato based meat sauce, lamb, and a gyro salad. We loved this wine since it was very elegant, balanced, and approachable. We give this 2008 Sebastiani Sonoma County Merlot a well deserved 91 points! Sometimes you don't have to pay alot to get great flavor and quality. This is one of those wines. If you have a 2008 vintage of this Merlot, we recommend you drink it before the end of 2014. WineSplashing!!

Winemaker Notes - This crimson colored Merlot is full of intense dark chocolate aromas which are underscored by ripe huckleberry witha hint of cassis. On the palate the wine is concentrated with deep, dark fruit such as black cherry, boysenberry and blackberry pie notes. This Merlot nishes with white pepper spice and folds into an elegant French oak vanilla symphony. This Merlot pairs well with Rib Eye steak alongside a mixed green and beet salad, or with Beef Strogano .
