With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Really pretty merlot. Smooth drinking, nice cherry and berry favors. A little bit of smooth oak. Drinks nicely after a short decant.

Dark crimson color, with aromas of toasted oak, black cherry jam and spice. this wine is a full-bodied, yet elegant glass with rich black cherry fruit and earth. The finish is slightly tannic and has lingering oak flavors. It should age well for the next five years and will develop Pomerol-like density and texture.

A medium top, dark crimson-colored wine with aromas of cherry, allspice, herbs and oak. It displays supple medium-bodied texture with black cherry fruit and vanilla flavors. This Merlot has a finish of oak and spice, reminiscent of the great Pomerols and St. Emilions of Bordeaux.

Sleek, offering elegant black cherry, plum and berryish flavors, with cedary, toasty oak adding texture and flavor dimensions. Drink now through 2007.

A blend of cassis, blackberry and herb flavors, couched in subtle oak, with moderate body and ripe tannins. The finish is long, with a hint of bitterness, however. Best from 200 through 2004.

Here's a tasty rendition of a medium-intensity Merlot from one of the first families of Sonoma wine. The deep red color is almost opaque, with purple highlights. Cherry and sandalwood spice aromas carry through to the flavors, with supple, bitter chocolate tannins. Round and balanced, this is the closest you'll get to a big, rich style in this price category. It will match well with all the steak, roasts and robust everyday dishes you can name.

Given a choice, we'll take Merlot from Sonoma County any day. Our cusp climate (not hot, not cold) and porous soils seem to consistently bring out the best in this noble Bordeaux variety. The 2007 is a great example. It shines with black cherries, plums, dried herbs, vanilla and mocha. The powerful aromas and soft, rich flavors make it the perfect choice for a wide range of foods and occasions. ~ Mark R. Lyon, Winemaker Sleek and tightly wound, with cherry, herb and cedar aromas and chewy lead pencil tannins. Drink now. 50,000 cases made. -TF

A light, fruity, spicy California Merlot, with generous plum and blackberry aromas and flavors shaded by vanilla and clove touches on the finish. Drinkable now.
