Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Appellation Selection 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Vineyards: The Alexander Valley is located north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is one of the warmer AVAs in the region making it the perfect spot for red Bordeaux grapes. 54% of the Cabernet came from Vimark, with 28% hailing from gravelly blocks with Clone #4, #6, #7, and #337 from the Lyon Vineyard. In addition, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot were added to the final blend. Vintage: 2014 was a long, mild vintage in the Alexander Valley. Bud break began in late March with fruit set in early May. Warm, dry summer months with no extreme heat spikes set the stage for a long growing season. Crop thinning in late August due to heavy cluster weight led into harvest in September. We began harvesting the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes on September 14th through October 14th, 2014. Winemaking: After a three-day cold soak, we crushed and fermented the grapes at relatively warm temperatures in stainless steel tanks. After pressing, each lot was blended or lightly egg-white fined to remove green tannins. The wine was aged for 14 months, primarily in new and one-year-old French oak barrels. A smaller percentage went into Hungarian and American oak. A portion of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot was added during the first assemblage for balance, aromatics and flavor. Winemaker’s Notes: This 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dense, ruby red color. Blackberry and English tea aromas with hints of dark chocolate and espresso set the stage for the rich palate. A full mouthfeel of dark fruit, clove spice and leafy characteristics accentuate this elegant Cabernet. The tannins are ripe and round, affording early drinkability. Loamy earth and mocha from the oak linger on the finish. - David Nakaji, Winemaker Composition: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec 4% Petit Verdot 3% Merlot Cooperage: 14 months in 50% new French and Hungarian oak barrels and one-year-old French, Hungarian and American oak Alcohol: 14.9% TA: 0.58 g/100ml pH: 3.82

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Vintage: 2013 01/25/2018

Vineyards: The Alexander Valley is located north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is one of the warmer AVAs in the region making it the perfect spot for red Bordeaux grapes. 61% of the Cabernet came from gravelly blocks with Clone #4, #6, #7, and #337 from the Lyon Vineyard. It also includes grapes from the Vimark and Mountain Terraces vineyards. Merlot was added coming from the Cherryblock and Pinnacle Vineyards. Vintage: 2013 was a warm, dry season with good lighter, winter rainfall at the start of the drought. Crop set was above average for Cabernet; but the drier, warmer summer meant smaller berries. The nighttime temperatures were cool in August and September, enabling more color and flavor development. Flawless, fall weather allowed complete ripeness of both fruit and tannins. We harvested the grapes September 14th – October 14th, 2013. Winemaking: After a three-day cold soak, we crushed and fermented the grapes at relatively warm temperatures in stainless steel tanks. After pressing, each lot was blended or lightly egg-white fined to remove green tannins. The wine was aged for 13 months, primarily in new and one-year-old French oak barrels. A smaller percentage went into Hungarian and American oak. A portion of Merlot was added during the first assemblage for balance, aromatics and flavor. Winemaker’s Notes: Dense ruby red in color, this 2013 has beautiful aromatics of blackberry and bergamot tea with hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. Rich, yet compact flavors of blackberry erupt on the palate in a more elegant style with some Cabernet spice. It finishes with loamy earth and vanilla from the oak barrels. An outstanding vintage for riper styled Cabernets coming from the Alexander Valley! - Mark R. Lyon, Winemaker Composition: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon 11% Merlot Cooperage: 13 months in 50% new French oak barrels with a small amount of Hungarian and American oak Alcohol: 14.9% TA: 0.56 g/100ml pH: 3.91 ** Only 5 in Stock **

Vintage: 2012 06/26/2015

Winemaker’s Notes: Medium to dark ruby red in color, this 2012 has beautiful aromatics of ripe cranberries and dark cherries with hints of vanilla oak and bergamot tea. Lively and rich flavors of blackberry and black cherry erupt on the palate, with caramel and vanilla oak being more prominent in its youth. It finishes with classic Alexander Valley terroir characteristics of tea and minerality along with tannins to reign in the fruit. Overall, it was an excellent vintage and should age very well. - Mark R. Lyon, Winemaker Vineyards: The Alexander Valley is located north of the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. Vintage: 2012 was a long growing season with an abundance of high-quality fruit. Crop set was higher than usual for Cabernet, but the long and moderate summer weather enabled the grapes to ripen evenly. A warm, late September brought in enough heat to fully ripen Cabernet by early to mid October. We harvested the grapes September 29th – October 18th, 2012.
