Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This opens with notes of vanilla, toasted coconut and toasted almond over dusty black berry fruits with a hint of eucalyptus adding complexity. Very smooth an entry with well-managed tannins just floating beneath the surface of the rich, black currant and black cherry fruit. The tannin tightens up a bit on the mid-palate but this wine remains supple and rich right through the medium length finish. On the back end, and the finish particularly, this picks up nice notes of bitterest chocolate and a redder fruit profile. This is a bit of a throw back style of wine, and as such is very satisfying. 89pts

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Sebastiani knows how to make good Cabernet. Itandrsquo;s wired into their hard drive, and with this lovely andrsquo;07, theyandrsquo;ve again succeeded. The wine is dry, elegant and drinkable now with upscale fare. It shows the herbal quality of Alexander Valley Cabs, with a sage note to the blackberries, cherries and sweet tobacco.

An elegant style, with supple flavors layered underneath ripe currant, plum and black cherry fruit thatandrsquo;s intense, concentrated, full-bodied and balanced, finishing with fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2017.

A rich, concentrated, deeply complex wine, laden with mocha, currant, blackberry and spicy anise notes. The tannins and oak flavors also have a strong presence, but the focus and depth of flavor are impressive. Best from 2006 through 2011.

This wine comes from Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County. One of the warmer areas of the county, Alexander Valley is known fro making wines with soft and supple tannins. Sebastiani created the Appellation Selection series so that winemaker Mark Lyon could spotlight subregions within Sonoma County.

This dark garnet-colored wine has black tea and black cherry aromas with hints of cigar box and mocha from barrel aging. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a hint of juicy blackberry, this wine is well balanced with flavors of cedar, raspberry and cocoa. The finish is long, carried by the toasty oak, forest floor character and structured tannins that promise this wines potential in the next several years. Enjoy now, cherishing the fine grained tannins and full body, or cellaring up to five years for a softening of the tannins and emergence of more spice, leather, vanilla and chocolate notes.
