Sebastiani Cab Alexander 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

With over a century of winemaking experience in Sonoma, Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the great growing regions of Sonoma County, becoming one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals. For this wine, Sebastiani sourced the Cabernet Sauvignon from three Sonoma County sub-appellations known for their outstanding quality grapes and long-lived wines: Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Sonoma Valley. In keeping with classic Bordeaux style, they blended in Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec for added complexity and drinkability. Included was a small amount of Petite Sirah to contribute more color and tannin.

With the spotlight on single vineyards and specific sub-appellations such as Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Russian River Valley, Sebastiani produces wine under the Sonoma County, Appellation Selection and Proprietary Selection designations. Founded in 1904 by Samuele Sebastiani, the winery is best known for its Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Sonoma County’s most coveted wines. The winery is located just blocks from Sonoma’s historic downtown plaza and offers historical tours as well as extensive picnic grounds and hospitality venues. Sebastiani is Sonoma’s only continuously-operated, family-owned, century-old winery. In today’s era of mergers and consolidation, it is particularly proud of its family heritage. In 2001, case production was significantly reduced to 100,000 cases per year: producing only one brand, Sebastiani, exclusively from the great winegrowing regions of Sonoma County. The fermentation cellars were rebuilt from the ground up, utilizing state of the art equipment which allows for gentle handling of fruit and must and fermentation of small lots of wine from specific vineyards and vineyard blocks. The resulting wines are receiving unprecedented critical acclaim and are in high demand. Growing production incrementally to meet demand without sacrificing quality, the winery’s current production is 300,000 cases a year. Sebastiani’s most famous wine, the Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon, is complemented by the highly acclaimed blended red wine Secolo, the limited production Appellation Selection wines and a line of Sonoma County varietals which offer extremely high quality and exceptional value. Scents of vanilla and cedar. Leather, oak, and dark berry flavors.

Based on a previous tasting, I expected not to like this when I tasted it again in Feb. '08, but, oddly, I thought it was pretty nice. Perhaps the bottle I tasted before was not stored properly.

Very heavy fruit flavors. Dark red and black berry flavors. Not the biggest fan of merlots, but this one's not too bad...

Wine Tasting NotesThe color on this wine is incredible, a very dark crimson. The aromas of blackberry, espresso and black olives allude to the richness of this wine and start your mouth watering. It is very concentrated in the mouth with almost sweet blackberry jam fruit, terroir flavors and mouth-coating tannins. Ripe berry and oak frames the finish of this ripe and structured wine. Enjoy with a decadent meal: aged steaks or a prime rib.

This dark garnet-colored wine has black tea and black cherry aromas with hints of cigar box and mocha from barrel aging. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a hint of juicy blackberry, this wine is well balanced with flavors of cedar, raspberry and cocoa. The finish is long, carried by the toasty oak, forest floor character and structured tannins that promise this wine’s potential in the next several years. Enjoy now, cherishing the fine grained tannins and full body, or cellaring up to five years for a softening of the tannins and emergence of more spice, leather, vanilla and chocolate notes.

This dark garnet-colored wine has black cherry and blackberry aromas with hints of coconut from the oak. The flavor is full-bodied with lots of blackberry on the entry with firm tannins and subtle oak in the back palate. It is a richer chewier wine than the 2003 vintage due to the warmth and ripeness of the vintage. It will most definitely improve with bottle age.
