Sean Thackrey Petite Sirah Mendocino County Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1979 Sean Thackrey turned his hand from selling antique books to winemaking. He is definitely not your usual winemaker. Living on the edge of the world down in Marin county he makes these handcrafted wines in his outdoor winery beneath the eucalyptus trees. Sean is the kind of wine-maker who makes the “business” of wine the pleasure that it can be. Totally dedicated to the production of his own style of wine, a little eccentric possibly (as so many of the best people are), straight-talking yet generous and very much with the courage of his own convictions. His wines are as individual and idiosyncratic as he is. Sirius is a petite Sirah, a grape known to thrive in California, with dense and ruby-tinged qualities. This wine exudes Licorice, acacia flower, graphite and deep black fruit aromas. It is full-bodied with great purity and firm tannins, depth and richness. All in all, Sirius is a powerful wine with great texture and great ripeness, and should be enjoyed with suitable strong-tasting cuisine. Try it with spicy beef stew, roast duck drizzled with orange jus, or a rich and indulgent chocolate nemesis dessert.

Sean Thackrey is a cult winemaker in California known for his eccentric (though rather effective) approaches to oenology. He is an avid reader of ancient and Medieval texts, and this has influenced his unconventional techniques, including leaving grapes exposed outside “under the stars” for 24 hours while fermenting. His website includes an extensive online library of some of the early texts that inspired him.  Orion is his flagship wine, produced from a field blend from the Rossi vineyard, which has the distinction of growing old vine clones from pre-phylloxera Syrah. Many believe this is the truest expression of the grape since most of the ones in France became non-distinct hybrids due to the grafting initiative necessary to ward off the destructive mites (Syrah at one time had different classifications and clones in the Rhone, with each vineyard and appellation known for its unique strain of the grape. In the past century, for the sake of simplicity, all Syrah became classified as one grape). The other grapes in the blend have grown naturally there since at least 1905.    Other ancient poet and astroligically-influenced wines produced by Thackrey are Pleiades (a non-vintage experimental blend), Andromeda (Pinot Noir from Marin County), Taurus Cline Vineyard Mourvedre, Sirius Eaglepoint Ranch Mendociono County Petite Sirah and Aquila Eagle Point Ranch Sangiovese. According to Wikipedia, his total output per year is about 4,000 cases.  Read less
