Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

User Reviews for Sean Thackrey Orion

Winemaker's Notes:

In 1979 Sean Thackrey turned his hand from selling antique books to winemaking. He is definitely not your usual winemaker. Living on the edge of the world down in Marin county he makes these handcrafted wines in his outdoor winery beneath the eucalyptus trees. Sean is the kind of wine-maker who makes the “business” of wine the pleasure that it can be. Totally dedicated to the production of his own style of wine, a little eccentric possibly (as so many of the best people are), straight-talking yet generous and very much with the courage of his own convictions. His wines are as individual and idiosyncratic as he is. Compared with Sean Thackrey's other wines, Orion (more or less a Syrah) is a different beast. This wine is young, intense and vibrant with plum, raspberry and toasty oak, it comes from the Andrew Rossi vineyard in St. Helena, a legendary old vineyard with ancient and gnarled head-pruned vines over a hundred years old and extremely low yielding. This is where the varietal uncertainty stems from and some of the vines may be Durif. The colour is purple-black, aromas are of mint and blackberry notes with floral hints. This red has great intensity, a full-body, big black fruit on the palate with tints of eucalyptus and minerality, tannin considerable but well-integrated and supple, lovely balance, elegant acidity and long length. This is one of California’s classics, so definately give this wine a chance to be enjoyed on its own terms, though it can handle robust, hearty dishes. Try with Lamb stew, grilled red meats and grilled vegetables.
