Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills Southing 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Oaky and smoky on the nose with spicy tones layered over a core of deep, rich, black fruit. Still a bit tight this smells promising. Bright and rich in the mouth with black fruit to match the nose. The acid is a touch low here lending this a very broad and somewhat flat mouthfeel, but the wine does feel a little tight and compact so age may help brighten things up a bit. There is very nice freshness to the fruit with obvious but balanced oak spice throughout the mid-palate and onto the moderate finish which is clipped by some wood tannin. Obviously very well made and shows promise but the lowish acidity worries me a bit. 90pts.

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard. At Sea Smoke, we produce Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of our estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across our hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir. Our shallow clay soils are planted to French clones on vigor-reducing rootstocks, resulting in fewer grape clusters of intense flavor, and our artisinal approach to winemaking results in wines that are a reflection of the unique land on which they are grown. We believe that Sea Smoke's rare geography and commitment to quality have produced wines of exceptional complexity and grace. We hope that you agree and welcome your comments. Read less

Cola and sassafras on the nose with a cool, deep quality to the fruit that draws you in the glass to discover the notes of perfumed wood, crayon, sand, and coco butter. This is very bright up front with a lovely leafy quality that serve to draw out the deep, dark black raspberry with it touch of coffee grinds and bitter earth component that add another layer of contrast This finishes with very fine bitter cherry fruit and some small but stiff tannins that add a fine touch of mouthgrab. There’s a lot going on here and this is still young but it show’s incredible poise on the palate. 93pts

Deeper color then most Pinot's I have enjoyed. Nose had some clove and berry up front. Enjoyed the hints of other fruits and robust dusty finish that introduced some cola and a tad bit of cinnamon spice. Will hold up to red meats and will pair nicely with pasta in red sauce.

Bright and hot, this wine is certainly not simple. It's full of baking spices, tar and leather, cherries, black licorice and oak. The most pleasant part is the finish, which is long but mellow but fills the mouth and is full of red fruits.

Soft, velvety, bigger. Light sweetness. Very pinoty. More acid. Smoky bacon nose.

Fantastic! More subtle than its bigger, fruitier brethren with a long, beguiling finish. Not so thick and plush. Less power, more finesse. Highly recommended.

Deep ruby red. Red and dark berry preserve aromas are complemented by notes of rooty sassafras vanilla and smoky Indian spices. Sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors stain the palate and pick up a spicy quality with air along with a note of candied rose. In a weighty style but not lacking for energy or freshness with strong finishing thrust and a persistent note of candied flowers. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Produced from a south-facing hillside vineyard, the 2002 Pinot Noir Southing reveals a ruby/purple in addition to abundant aromas of sweet cherries, currants, and hints of plums and flowers. Made in a Cote de Beaune-like style, with sweet kirsch and black cherry flavors mixed with spicy wood as well as loamy soil notes, the Southing is more open and evolved than the Botella. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Tremendous richness, depth and concentration, with a gush of blueberry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that offers intensity, lively acidity and enough tannins to merit short-term cellaring. Drink now through 2011.

Ultraripe, rich and plush, with concentrated, detailed black cherry, wild berry and plummy flavors framed by firm toasty, cedary oak, and finishing with a long, intense, persistent aftertaste offering a wealth of flavors and plenty of rich minerally tannins. Drink now through 2009.

Everyone found this wine muscular and full-bodied, and noted its ripe flavors of blackberries that veer into chocolate, and high alcohol. As rich as the flavors are, tasters felt the wine could use more elegance and finesse.
