Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills Southing 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Oaky and smoky on the nose with spicy tones layered over a core of deep, rich, black fruit. Still a bit tight this smells promising. Bright and rich in the mouth with black fruit to match the nose. The acid is a touch low here lending this a very broad and somewhat flat mouthfeel, but the wine does feel a little tight and compact so age may help brighten things up a bit. There is very nice freshness to the fruit with obvious but balanced oak spice throughout the mid-palate and onto the moderate finish which is clipped by some wood tannin. Obviously very well made and shows promise but the lowish acidity worries me a bit. 90pts.

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard. At Sea Smoke, we produce Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of our estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across our hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir. Our shallow clay soils are planted to French clones on vigor-reducing rootstocks, resulting in fewer grape clusters of intense flavor, and our artisinal approach to winemaking results in wines that are a reflection of the unique land on which they are grown. We believe that Sea Smoke's rare geography and commitment to quality have produced wines of exceptional complexity and grace. We hope that you agree and welcome your comments. Read less

Cola and sassafras on the nose with a cool, deep quality to the fruit that draws you in the glass to discover the notes of perfumed wood, crayon, sand, and coco butter. This is very bright up front with a lovely leafy quality that serve to draw out the deep, dark black raspberry with it touch of coffee grinds and bitter earth component that add another layer of contrast This finishes with very fine bitter cherry fruit and some small but stiff tannins that add a fine touch of mouthgrab. There’s a lot going on here and this is still young but it show’s incredible poise on the palate. 93pts

Deeper color then most Pinot's I have enjoyed. Nose had some clove and berry up front. Enjoyed the hints of other fruits and robust dusty finish that introduced some cola and a tad bit of cinnamon spice. Will hold up to red meats and will pair nicely with pasta in red sauce.

Bright and hot, this wine is certainly not simple. It's full of baking spices, tar and leather, cherries, black licorice and oak. The most pleasant part is the finish, which is long but mellow but fills the mouth and is full of red fruits.

Soft, velvety, bigger. Light sweetness. Very pinoty. More acid. Smoky bacon nose.

Fantastic! More subtle than its bigger, fruitier brethren with a long, beguiling finish. Not so thick and plush. Less power, more finesse. Highly recommended.

The 2004 Pinot Noir Southing, which takes its name from a south-facing hillside vineyard, is a packed and stacked effort with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a restrained, but promising nose of black currants, cherries, and raspberries with forest floor/earthy undertones. This is a full-bodied, powerful Pinot revealing striking elegance, purity, and seamlessness. Although young and unevolved, it is well-balanced, and should drink well for 7-10 years.

The most balanced of Sea Smoke's three new Pinots, Southing was aged in about two-thirds new oak, which gives rich caramel, toasted coconut and exotic spice notes to the ripe fruit flavors. The wine explodes with cherries, raspberries, mulberries and even chocolate mint, finishing long and spicy, and leaving the impression of wholesomeness and completeness. Now showing its peak of youthful vivacity, this should develop for an additional six years.

Spicy, peppery wild berry aromas carry over to the palate, with firm tannins. Tight and compact, this is an austere style that's rich and full-bodied, with enough depth and complexity to merit short-term cellaring. Drink now through 2012.

Red-ruby. Strawberry, raspberry and nutty oak on the nose. Quite firm and dry in the mouth, with darker fruit flavors and more shape and grip that the Botella. Finishes oakier and longer, with firm tannins. This was aged in 60% new oak vs. 45% for the Botella.

Ultraripe, rich and plush, with concentrated, detailed black cherry, wild berry and plummy flavors framed by firm toasty, cedary oak, and finishing with a long, intense, persistent aftertaste offering a wealth of flavors and plenty of rich minerally tannins. Drink now through 2009.

Sea Smoke is one of those wineries that sells out immediately and hits the secondary market at astronomical prices, with good reason. The wine is as fine as coastal California Pinot gets, with ripe cherry pie, cola and chocolate macaroon flavors that are captivating in their youthful ebullience. With fine, ripe tannins and mouthwatering cool-climate acidity, this is elegantly balanced, and will hold for a good six years.

Vivid red. Expressive aromas of cherry compote, blackberry, licorice and smoky herbs. Lush, creamy cherry and dark berry flavors provide very good palate coverage and are framed by velvety tannins. A plush, weighty style of pinot that is energized by juicy acidity and finishes with very good focus and grip.
