Schug Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma Coast 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

This well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of vineyards from very different microclimates in Sonoma County. Grapes grown in the cooler Carneros district contribute spice and acidity for excellent food compatibility while the warmer-grown Bennett Valley grapes Sauvignon Musque contribute lush fruit flavors reminiscent of melon honeysuckle and grapefruit. These flavors are enhanced by the creamy richness of fermentation and aging on the yeast ("sur lie"). This wine finishes with a clean crisp acidity that makes it an ideal accompaniment to a wide range of soups salads and shellfish dishes. VINEYARDS: 100% Sauvignon Blanc: 29% Hi-Vista (Carneros); 27% Gieb Ranch (Sonoma Valley); 23% Judge Family (Bennett Valley); 21% Grossi (Sonoma Coast) HARVEST DATES: September 5th through October 1st 2008 SUGAR AT HARVEST: 24.1 degrees Brix average FERMENTATION: 50% tank fermented in stainless steel and aged sur-lie; 33% fermented in 130 to 650 gallon oak casks; 17% fermented in oak puncheons AGING / COOPERAGE: aged on the yeast ("sur-lie") for 3 months ALCOHOL: 13.5% by volume ACIDITY: TA = 0.80 g/100ml; pH = 3.10 PRODUCTION: 2379 cases (12 x 750ml) RELEASE DATE: June 1st 2009

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Bacchus and Eisele Vineyards). Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart. In 1995 Sonoma-born winemaker Michael Cox came on board at Schug. Trained in Enology at UC Davis, Mike worked in several Californian wineries before he was lured from Napa Valley to Carneros - Sonoma, to work with Walter Schug as his assistant winemaker. One year later he was promoted to Winemaker and placed in charge of the day-to-day winemaking duties, where he remains today. Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics. Read less

Wonderful grassy aromas with hints of melon and citrus. The flavors matched the aromas, with strong grass and citrus flavors. Light, crisp, and clean, with tingling acidity. A very good SB.

Crisp and tart like a good Sauvignon Blanc should be, and dry, with a blast of fruity flavor. Floods the palate with lemons, limes, grapefruits and green apples, and richer notes of guava and passionfruit. - S.H.
