Schug Chardonnay Carneros Heritage Reserve 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Our "Heritage Reserve" Chardonnay features separately vinified blocks of our Estate vineyard, blended for maximum complexity. Each block contributes a unique clonal and microclimate signature to the blend. The resulting wine shows intense fruit aromas of ripe pear and orange liqueur, complemented by toasty oak. Complex pear, apple and citrus flavors give way to a full-bodied texture and a long finish.

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. Walter Schug's reputation blossomed during his tenure as Founding Winemaker for Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the 1970s, where he made California’s first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend (Insignia) and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Bacchus and Eisele Vineyards). Drawing on his long experience in the production of fine wines in both Europe and California, Walter set up his own winery with his wife Gertrud in the cool, marine climate of the Carneros Appellation. Here he could focus on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that had always been close to his heart. In 1995 Sonoma-born winemaker Michael Cox came on board at Schug. Trained in Enology at UC Davis, Mike worked in several Californian wineries before he was lured from Napa Valley to Carneros - Sonoma, to work with Walter Schug as his assistant winemaker. One year later he was promoted to Winemaker and placed in charge of the day-to-day winemaking duties, where he remains today. Schug Carneros Estate Winery combines old world understanding and tradition with modern winemaking techniques. By using only the finest grapes available, and maintaining the best winemaking values, these wines have gained acceptance worldwide as true contemporary classics. Read less

Schug’s Heritage Reserve wines were developed to showcase the “best barrels of the vintage.” They blend only the “most complex fruit” from individually selected vineyards, claiming that each personally selected component contributes a signature quality to the blend. After hearing these bold statements, expectations were quite lofty for the 2005 Schug Heritage Reserve Chardonnay ; and every one of those expectations were pleasantly met! This is a true Reserve wine- showing class, nuance and beautiful balance. The quintessential dinner party wine, it will wow your guests on its own but step aside to brilliantly complement your food. It opens with an enticing nose of fresh stone fruit, pear and lemon all complemented by an underlying toastiness. Don’t worry however, if you are not the oaked Chardonnay type, the oak on the nose is as aggressive as it gets. As soon as the wine hits your palate you are delighted with zesty citrus, pineapple and crisp green apple. Dazzling, “complex” Carneros fruit is the backbone of this chardonnay. The balance is so well done, like us, you may finish the bottle before you come up with your own tasting notes!
