Schug Chardonnay Carneros 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Chardonnay grapes grown on the cool-climate Carneros Estate vineyard underwent traditional European winemaking practices of barrel fermentation and aging on the lees ("sur-lie"). Additional complexity was contributed by Chardonnay grown on the Sangiacomo Ricci Iund Cornerstones Smith and Wood Valley vineyards. The result is a wine with the powerful elegance of the finest white Burgundy. It has a ripe spicy tropical bouquet with flavors that suggest citrus pear and apple-butter. Well-balanced acidity gives it a crisp clean finish making it an excellent wine with food. Try it with cream soups seafood fowl veal and pasta dishes.. There's some verve and snap to the layered citrus flavors of this chardonnay. It has the fleshiness of lemon pulp and a sharper note of preserved lemon, rounded by darker tones of oak. It's a satisfying wine that will grow more complex with bottle age.

This wine's fresh scents of Granny Smith apples and juicy flavors of pear follow a clean, simple line. There's an orange-citrus note to balance the roundness of the fruit, a wine with finesse - and without heat. Serve it with plump sea scallops on a bed of braised leeks.
