Ripe with an almost peachy aspect to the cherry fruit on the nose that gains sweetness with notes of cherry pie and a hint of blackberry. There’s some oak here as well, with a little black spice, some toast and a hint of allspice. Medium-plus full in the mouth, this is a touch chewy, with solid depth of dark red fruit and just a tiny bit of green herb spice and forest floor adding some nuance. The oak shows up as a little sweet nuttiness and contributes to the nice edge of tannin on the finish. This is very smooth and elegant, with solid spice tones on the lightly tannic finish. 91 points

The spicy nose shows a little sweetness with red berry, cranberry and cherry notes over a nicely integrated toasty oak base note, all topped with hints of watermelon and rose petal. This shows off big tart wild cherry fruit on entry, followed by a lovely core of cran/raspberry fruit, flecked with gentle hints of earth, herb and mineral. There’s some very clean fruit here, with a clear mouthfeel that’s surprisingly fresh (from the nose I might have expected more sweetness). Just lovely, fresh and pure Pinot. 89 points

Oaky and herbal on the nose with attractive bitter almond nuances and some smokey, almost meaty top notes over stony cranberry and raspberry fruit. Very smooth and supple in the mouth, this is soft and round with lovely cherry, red currant and raspberry fruit flavors backed up by well judged oak spice and a nice hint of wild herbs. The finish reveals a hint of tannin adding a touch of texture, but is otherwise long and driven by cranberry, apple and raspberry fruit that shows a hint of minerality. Finishes with a bit of spice and sweet red cherry fruit. 88pts

Bright yet soft with earthy and freshly green tinged red berry, strawberry fruits on the nose. This is soft and caressing on the palate with admirable purity and while it is a touch simple it offers good, precise fruits that are attractive and delicious. Finishes with a bit of orange rind acidity that is brisk and cleansing. Well made entry level pinot. Drink 2009-2011 89pts

Creamy vanilla nose with red berry fruit. Pretty substantial tannins on the body for a pinot, and not as acidic as many others. Overall it's very smooth, pulls in some nice kiwi and stone fruit on the palate.

a light bodied, well-balanced pinot that, much like your date sharing this wine, may turn into something to enjoy with brunch the next day.

Bright ruby color with aromas of cherry skin, dried cranberries smoky undertones. The palate shows more cherry and dried fruit flavors with earthy notes. Clean with a nice solid backbone completed by a racy acidity. cranberry flavors hint of strawberrys

Rating: 83/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. A bit murky in scent and not at all keen about fruit, this wan, slightly stiff, bitter-edged wine is bothered by a persistent, oddly papery note and comes with no gleanings or hints that it will be appreciably bettered by age.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Rating: 75/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Decidedly off-putting aromas of scorched earth and smoke start this wine out on a slippery slope, and the murky, bitter, unfruity flavors that ensue do nothing at all to slow its slide into the do-not-buy zone.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Not suitable for drinking.

Silky, sweet-tart, and fully flavored, Carneros Pinot Noirs are certainly some of the nation’s finest versions of the wine modeled after red Burgundy. This wine from the Schug family is no exception. The middle of three tiers of Pinot Noirs and reasonably priced at $24, the Carneros bottling is what the family considers their flagship wine. A “Heritage Reserve” is made with the best of the Carneros barrels while the lower priced “Sonoma Coast” bottling incorporates fruit from other vineyards in the designated area. Owner/Winemaster Walter Schug and winemaker Michael Cox seek to showcase “clonal diversity” with this Pinot Noir so they vinify each of the seven source lots separately. Lightly saturated ruby and moderately viscous, this wine has aromas of strawberry, hay, rootbeer, cherry cola, peppermint, and juicy fruit gum. It is medium to full in body with ripe fruit and a lively mouthfeel. Layers of rootbeer, cherry, and clove mingle on the palate. The finish is sweet tart and very slightly gripping. Compared to the price of ordinary and often disappointing red Burgundy, this wine is a relative bargain.

Winemaker's Notes:

This classic Carneros region Pinot Noir offers a wide range of flavors and aromas, in the tradition of the finest red Burgundies of France. “Clonal diversity” is achieved by carefully blending several separately vinified lots, with each retaining its own clonal signature in the blend. The result, a complex wine with a rich bouquet full of cherries, berries and hint of spicy new oak. Flavors of bright cherry, currant and strawberry are followed by a spicy, smooth texture and elegant finish. This wine will pair nicely with lamb, duck, and even grilled fish and will improve with additional cellaring.

Unique clonal characteristics combine to create a wine of balance and complexity. Dense and dark. Great fruit dominated by cherry flavors with lingering darker cola notes.
