Food Pairings for Schug Cabernet Sauvignon
Bright and youthfully colored in the glass. Red currant fruit with some stemmy, green qualities on the nose. On the palate, it's well structured and provides a ripe mouthful of cherry and currant. Just a touch of oak. Nicely layered berry, cassis and spice. Bright, lively fruit and acidity. Nice that there's no green qualities in the flavors as was on the nose. 2/18/12
External Reviews for Schug Cabernet Sauvignon
A very nice Cabernet that's superdrinkable because of its soft, appealing fruit, but also has plenty of complexity. Cherries, blackberries, blueberries and dark chocolate are enriched with spicy oak notes, leading to a long, balanced finish.
Very ripe, with mouth filling blackberry, currant, cassis and smoky oak flavors that finish dry and spicy. There's an edge to the tannins that suggests limited ageability.
Schug is one of the wineries that sticks in my mind for greatly improving the quality of their Bordeaux reds in recent years. This Cab, with a little Merlot and Cab Franc, is a great value in its price range. It's dry and balanced, with rich, ripe black currant, chocolate and earthy flavors, and will easily stand up to fancy fare at the table.
