Schramsberg Vineyards Champagne Blend California Brut Rosé 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A touch floral on the nose with a pure yeatiness/creaminess that recalls fresh brie. A touch sweet across the mid-palate but not overly so and the acid and mineral tones dry out the finish. An interesting and enjoyable Demi-sec. 88pts

Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Not bad for the money yummy fruit flavors just not amazing balance and bubbles don't hold up as long with a bit too much acidity but all in all a decent value.

A lightly yeasty nose leads to a demi sec sparkling wine thats softly sweet and full of delicate floral notes. There's a good mousse of fine bubbles and along with a nice biscuit character and some dried petal notes its rather nice.

Classic traditional method aromas. Dry to off-dry, just a bit of residual sugar, grapefruit and melon flavors. Ripe, pleasant acidity.

Light salmon in color with aromas of red cherry and yeast. The pinot noir definitely comes out in the nose. Same acidity as the blanc de blanc with rose water and cherry in the taste.

Lovely wine ... nice delicate nose with a yeast and biscuit and touch of honey. Slightly sweet, almost honey flavor over top of the biscuit and yeast. Very enjoyable.

The new vintage of one of our favorite domestic sparkling rose makers is here, and just as the previous vintages the 2009 Schramsberg 2009 Rose is delicious.

A terrific blush bubbly, rich and sophisticated in the mouth. The mousse is very fine and silky, and the flavors are just tremendous. Raspberries, strawberries, brioche, sweet vanilla and toast end in a long, opulent swirl of spices. This Pinot Noir ... Wine Enthusiast. Delicate as a feather, with lovely strawberry blossom aromas and rich but elegant flavors of raspberry, white chocolate and cinnamon spice that finish with a crisp minerality. Boldly structured, yet retains a sense of delicacy, with floral strawberry and spice aromas and full-bodied cherry, vanilla and caramel apple flavors that linger on a festive finish. Winemaker Notes - Juicy strawberry jumps out of the glass, followed by raspberry and cherries. The berry bouquet is complimented by mandarin orange and papaya. The palate has exotic flavors of mango and cantaloupe, followed by mouthwatering citrus. A juicy viscosity leads to a long, lingering finish.
