Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since. Read less

Nice biscuity value sparkler. Straw color. Faint aromas of toasted bread and lemon. Citrus, nutty, and toasty flavors. Fairly impressive complexity, given the price.

I found this to be very simple and enjoyable. Not biting but not overly sweet. Really enjoyed it - would buy again for $30 or less

A pale salmon color in the glass, producing very pink foam. Strawberry and toast surrounded by yeast, coconut and peach with a wild brine hint. Champagne is not only for special occasions; when you have Champagne, it becomes a special occasion. While Champagne is delicious before dinner, it is even better with dinner, and this wine produced by Schramsberg Vineyards of Napa Valley would be a great choice. The yeasty, toasty nose is followed by a creamy, round, medium-bodied taste, featuring good fruit and accented by a crisp finish. Serve with grilled salmon or halibut, or seafood in a light cream sauce. Enjoy the sparkle!

In a fruity style, emphasizing its ripe, spicy pear, apple and melon flavors and hints of vanilla. At this price, a good value.

This bubbly is both complex and fun to drink, with lemon curd and spicy caramel aromas that lead to crisp but luscious cherry, apple and toasty vanilla flavors. Drink now.

Shows many of the qualities of Schramsberg’s more expensive sparklers except the bubbles aren’t quite as refined. The flavors are rich and satisfying in strawberries raspberries vanilla and toast.
