Schramsberg J. Schram Chardonnay Pinot Noir North Coast 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines Review Rated 95 In the tradition that this wine has so clearly established over the years, the newest rendition of Schramsberg's flagship wine delivers stunningly rich and complex sparkling wine character. Its incredibly expressive aromas smell of aged yeasts, soy, tangy lemons, freshly baked crusty bread and a quiet hint of ginger ale, and its impeccably balanced flavors follow suit from front to back. Brisk and austere, yet compelling in its layered richness, this one will keep in bottle for a few years and may improve a bit as well. Wine Enthusiast Review Rated 94 Right up there with the recent string of fabulous ttes de cuvees, the 2000 shows the concentration, power and subtlety of this, the winery's top release. A blend of Chardonnay with 20% Pinot Noir, it shows exotic and complex flavors of tangerines and raspberries, candied ginger, coconut macaroons, baked bread and yeast. It's delicious now, but all the parts haven't come together. Hold until mid-2008 through 2010, but could go well beyond that. Wine Tasting Notes The J. Schram opens with aromas of glazed pineapple, orange marmalade and crisp green apples. Justbaked puff pastry and rich creamy notes are derived from barrel fermentation (38%) and yeast aging. This powerful sparkling wine showcases the bright citrus and tangy, tropical fruit of the Tognetti, Hyde and Schwarze Chardonnay vineyards along Bayview Avenue in southern Napa Carneros. The addition of 24% Pinot Noir lends subtle red fruit aromas and gives breadth to both the nose and palate. A creamy yet refreshing wine, the 1999 J. Schram has a long, quenching, seamless finish.

Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since. Read less
