Schramsberg Brut Blanc de Noirs North Coast 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 Blanc de Noirs has lively aromas of guava and fresh peach that lead way to subtle aromas reminiscent of a briar berry patch. The fruitful nose is complemented by warm almond and salted toffee. The palate is generous and bursting with flavors of Rainier cherry and fresh watermelon, followed by baked orange and fresh sourdough bread. The finish is long and lingering with a snappy acidity. 87% Pinot Noir, 13% Chardonnay. County Composition: 32% Napa, 31% Sonoma, 30% Mendocino, 7% Marin.

Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since. Read less

Simple but precise nose of lime, yeast and white mushroom. A fine mousse greets the palate delivering a lovely version of the nose, rich with sweet lime juice, gentle yeasty notes that hint at white mushroom and some subtle pale honey notes. There’s a nice hint of minerality on the back end that drive the moderately long finish. This is really lovely and precise. 90pts

Offers bright aromas of fresh green apple and juicy pineapple, complemented by yeasty sweet bread dough. The aromas lead into an expressive and generous taste of white stone fruit, apple, pear and tart grapefruit. An undertone of salty minerality and a complex creamy palate are supported to the end with a mouthwatering acidity.

Made from 100% Chardonnay, this bubbly shows Schramsberg’s ease of producing rich, clean and elegant sparkling wines. It’s delicious now in vanilla, yeast, lime and Asian pear flavors, with some sweetness from the dosage, but try giving it 5–6 years in the cellar.

A little scoury but delicious with ripe strawberry raspberry and orange-preserve flavors. Mostly Pinot Noir with some Chardonnay it shows fine acidity and a Champagne-like yeastiness. Drink now.
