Food Pairings for Schmitt Sohne Riesling Kabinett
Wanted to expand my palate. I like German rieslings so I decided to try something else and picked up a Liebfraumilch. There aren't a lot of options around my area when picking one of these so I settled on the Shmitt Sohne since I think their QBA riesling is better than average. Nose is pretty light and a little floral. Actually reminds me of some homemade dandelion wines I've tried. On the palate I was quite taken aback. I had tried a Liebraumilch years ago and thought it was awful. It was so long ago that I don't remember what it tasted like but I do remember dumping half the bottle down the drain. I was afraid this would be a repeat but upon tasting it I was pleasantly surprised. Nice ripe peach with just a hint of.....grapefruit? Sounds weird I know but I actually like it. There's also a slight bit of residual sugar giving this wine just a hint of sweetness. Acidity is pronounced but not overwhelming and balances quite well with the sugars. Finish lingers for a few seconds and reminds me of eating fresh citrus which is likely where I'm picking up the grapefruit flavors. I'm not an expert on this variety by any means so I'm simply going to rate it based on how I like it. 3.5 glasses, I'll probably buy another for the wine rack. This would be quite good served chilled on a hot summer day.
