Schmitt Söhne Riesling 2005
Schmitt-Söhne is a large company that produces wines throughout Germany. They are best known for their Rieslings, produced in different regions within the country and from dry to sweet. They also make wines from different varietals in red, white, rosé and sparkling, also from dry to sweet.
Strong hints of fresh apple on the nose. Very light, crisp, with a sweetness I am not to akin to, but not a syrupy sweetness found in a desert wine. Strong apple theme throughout but not bursting with flavor and a abrupt finish. I can't say that this is my favorite of wines.
On the nose, it was a very pleasant combination of apple, apricot and nectarines, mellowed out a bit by pear undertones. The apple came through again on the palate, starting with a slight sweetness and finishing with a tart bit of Granny Smith. It was definitely sweet, though not overpowering, likely due to the bit of dryness that came through on the back of the throat. Very nice acidity actually managed to produce what I call the “salt & vinegar chip” phenomenon. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Try thinking very hard about super vinegary chips…feel your cheeks pucker? Starting to salivate like one of Pavlov’s dogs? That’s it. A good effort at a value price, but really nothing special.
Very easy drinking wine, great for a casual dinner with friends
Sweet, not too sweet like a reisling, but dry. A good wine for social drinking. I have had a hard time finding it.
Three and a half glasses

Wine Tasting NotesPiesporter Goldtrpfchen is one of the famous vineyards in Germany and it is well known all over the world. This wine is growing on slate-soil, which is typical for the Mosel area. The fruity acidity, rather than alcohol, is the backbone of these wines and enhances this longevity. The wines have a very full body and a firm elegance.
Winery NotesThis late harvested wine is full bodied and rich with mouth filling ripe apricot, pineapple and honey overtones. The good acid balance results in a firm, lush, lingering finish that is very focused. Serve by itself or with a variety of fruits, cheeses and desserts.
