In 1997, the Prädikatsweingüter - an association of vintners dedicated to the production of high quality wines with distinction abbreviated as VDP - made it a standing rule in their statute that the most renown single vineyard sites can only be used in combination with the Riesling grape and in compliance with strict quality criteria.
