Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Spatlese Hermann Donnhoff 2005

Member Review by Philip James:

A fantastic wine. An off-dry nose with sweet earthy minerality. Its a low alcohol wine (8.5%) - fermentation is stopped early to give it some residual sweetness. But note that this is in no way cloying, its just off-dry, not sweet, and balanced by some good acidity. A nice finish, with good acidity again. Served with spicy salt and pepper shrimp in a mango sauce. Given as a gift - fantastic! Didnt realize that it was a $40 bottle, but its a 4* nonetheless.

A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Shows delicacy and nuance. Vanilla, apricot, lime and a fireworks of mineral get a lift from the vibrant structure. Long and complex, with a gingerbread and mineral aftertaste. Drink now through 2020. 205 cases imported. -BS Wine Spectator. A Riesling wine from Nahe in Germany. 2005 Donnhoff, Hermann Riesling Spatlese Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg 750ml
