Schloss Johannisberger Grunlack Spätlese Rheingau 1971

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

While obviously past it's prime, this was relatively low fill bottle, the nose still offered up notes of bookbinder's glue, parchment, chipped varnish and old dried orange peel with an over-arching depth of maderized tones. In the mouth the wine presented a distinctly fresher profile with it's vibrant acidity supporting a touch of fresh apple fruit. Still with a vibrant and light mouthfeel this has a fine texture and excellent length but the flavor profile will only appeal to the necrophiliacs of the wine world. 84pts

Aromas of yeast, butter and caramel. Palate has a touch of sweetness, with flavors of baked fruit and some citrus. There's a rustic toastiness on the finish.

Deep amber with a very madirized nose - thickly sweet and oxidized. Retains good acidity and some of the minerality, and even has a touch of fruit (green apples). Very nice to try, but clearly past its prime. Oh...and my 1,000th wine reviewed on Snooth!
