Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Gaisberg 2008
This classic style Riesling is different from the 2007 because of the botrytis. It has a star right lemon hue and while lemons, limes and mandarins come to the fore, there is a background of ripe stonefruit such as peaches and apricots. Honeysuckle and honeycomb influences come from botrytis, which has also made the wine more full bodied and concentrated. It has a spine of natural acidity and tingling minerality that helps draw out the palate structure to a citrus zest finish.
I felt the 2006 and 2007 vintages had overbearing acidity compared to earlier vintages (although the 2006 is drinking well now in 2009), the 2008 seems to have a touch more botrytis and is back to the classic earlier style of the wines. Lovely sweetness with mandarin/grapefruit/lime marmalade flavours, well balanced with crisp acidity. It is a crime that they release and sell this into restaurants so early, after 2-3 years this wine is sensational.

Hell goldgelb in seiner Farbe, kokettiert der Gaisberger Riesling geradezu in der Nase, verrät dabei Düfte von Pfirsichen und deren Schalen, von frischen Wiesenkräutern und –blumen sowie von frischen Orangen. Sehr transparent, zeigt er sich herrlich saftig, mit kerniger Säure und viel Biss, schönem Schmelz und guter Länge. Ein überaus terroirbetonter, fester Wein von Typizität, der enormen Spass bereitet.
