Editorial Reviews for Scavino Paolo Barolo Bric del Fiasc
Cut plum, smoke, tobacco and chamomile come together on a very floral and spiced nose with the wood playing a supporting role and late arriving dried fruit accents that turn into chocolate covered cherries with time along with strong minty top note. Powerful and broad on entry with dried cherry fruit and some nice limestone notes, along with a touch of savory beef jerky on the palate. This has a softness that covers the palate, a pretty feminine style in a voluptuous way, with good length and a bit of wood tannins lingering and building on the finish. the oak is quite obvious here. 90pts
A unique bottling, first time a Riserva was made and this was bottled for charity. Just one barrel of this was produced, all Cappello sommerso, natural yeast fermentation, ten months in fourth passage barrique, then two years in cask, a year longer than the traditional Bric del Fiasc bottling. Dark and pretty one the nose with obvious but not intrusive oak, there's some nice earthy spice and perfumy floral notes that drift up in the glass as well. Soft and almost opulent on entry, then rather firm and muscular with a dense core of dark berry fruit. This is tannic and tough on the finish, which is long and filled with nuanced burnished fruit, lots of cherry in alcohol and wild, woodsy berries all topped with aromatic rose hips. If the fruit hold out this could be special. 92pts
My notes read Barrel, Barrel, tar, earth, spice coffee, and pancetta so it wasn’t all bad but really this was smothered with oak. In the mouth it was big, plush and dumb. Sure it’s extracted and packed with tannin so it gives the appearance of having something going on but there is no depth here, just weight and while the vanilla tinged cherry fruit might appeal to some it is just not what I would want to drink. You can buy better wine for under $10 Because of the extraction and tannins this will enjoy a very long life and very likely will be better in 10 or 15 years but it will never be what I look for in Barolo. 2015-2030 78pts.
Crayons, charcoal and roasted meat great the nose with this very powerful, dark and earthy bouquet. There’s a lot of dried herb elements deeply embedded here and a pronounced paprika edge, but not much in the way of fruit. Up front this is big and rich with the pepper and paprika character found on the nose but it quickly looses all redeeming features on the hard, lean and stripped mid-palate finishing hot, short and bitter. 74pts
Probably my my favorite cru of the whole Scavino tasting range I did. Forest berries, milk chocolate, dusty and earthy. Awesome!
Big, big, big! Plums, licorice, dark fruits, the wine is very muscular on the palate! Full bodied, yet super elegant, the acidity & minerality gives this wine a superb texture. Great length with a superb lingering finish! QC (htttp://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com)
A special treat for me to taste this and it didn't disappoint. I thought it was well balanced and complex as I could truly smell and taste the sensations of ripe blackberries, almost withering rose petals, and a bit of tar. A fresh and flavorful barolo!
My number two wine of the night, the Bric dël Fiasc initially showed cherry and potpourri dust but with time transformed into something more with cherry compote, allspice, hard red candy, roses and cooking sausage. The palate showed a good amount of structure and intense cherry fruit with herbal tea and mushrooms. The finish presented silky tannin that lent to a brilliant aftertaste of sour red fruit.

This round red is full of cherry flavor with a rear guard of muscular tannins. Really monolithic today with the structure dominating. Though tightfisted on the finish there s sweet fruit at the core. Best from 2016 through 2032. BS Wine Spectator.
Good full deep red. Brooding medicinal nose shows less floral lift than the Cannubi but very good ripeness. Big and rich but with a subdued sweetness today; a bit lower-toned than the Cannubi. This very backward wine will need a long time in bottle to resolve its major load of tannins. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
Good deep red. Aromatic nose combines floral, tobacco and smoky elements. Sweet red fruit and floral flavors framed and lifted by harmonious acidity. An ample Barolo with clarity and class, not to mention superb balance. Finishes with perfectly buffered tannins and excellent persistence.
The estate's 2001 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a massive and strapping Barolo with an exciting nose of sweet ripe fruit, licorice, tar and mint. This deeply colored, masculine, full-bodied Barolo is packed with layers of dense backward dark fruit, prune, plum and macerated cherry flavors, with a distinctly mentholated note that gives it a sense of freshness and balance. It finishes with huge tannins which suggest patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.
The Scavino style is evident in the Bric del Fiasc: a combination of richness, power and backbone. Flavors of black plums and coffee, with a long tight finish.
The 1995 Barolo Bris de Fiasc is backward, with scents of smoke, tar, soy, jammy black cherry and blackberry fruit, and pain grillé. Full-bodied, expansive, soft, and seductive, with 13.5% alcohol and moderate tannin in the finish, it should be drunk over the next 10-12 years.
This wonderful, modern-style, full-bodied '95 Barolo packs in layers of mocha, vanilla, cigar box and red fruit notes. Shows ripe flavors and tannins and a long, impressive finish. Drink now through 2008.
