Sbragia Merlot Dry Creek Home Ranch Vineyard 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Merlot features aromas of ripe black cherries, berries and a fruit forward palate of black fruit, cocoa and brown sugar/cinnamon spice. The addition Cabernet Franc creates depth in the wine's structure that carries through to a long finish.

I've had for some time, a small, family-owned winery making limited, individual lots of wine from grapes grown in select blocks of my favorite vineyards. I've always had one foot in Sonoma and the other in Napa. Both areas mean a lot to me emotionally. I'm more attached to Dry Creek because it's where I raised my kids. But the wines that I've made at Beringer are like children, so Napa is also a very special place for me. Either way, the wines are intensely personal, an expression not only of terroir, but of my family's winemaking heritage. -Ed Sbragia   Come visit us at our beautiful location at the end of Dry Creek Road. Our winery is perched on a hillside, overlooking the entire valley with sweeping views from our terrace. Guests are invited to bring a picnic or purchase light deli items from our tasting room and enjoy the sunshine and vineyard views. Seated Terrace Tastings are now available by appointment. Sbragia Family Vineyards prides itself on its single vineyard varietals and small case production. Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of the wines are made from vineyards owned by the Sbragia family, but do include select vineyards from Sonoma and Napa Valley as well. Our wines have received many accolades and are considered some of California’s best. The only thing better than the view is the wine! Read less

Ed Sbragia was head winemaker for Beringer Vineyards for many years producing award winnig, top scoring wines in every category. Now he lives in Dry Creek Valley and produces wines from his own vineyards. This Home Ranch Merlot is sourced from his 8 acre Merlot vineyard that used to be a flood plain before the built the Dry Creek Dam. As a result the vineyard has excellent drainage leaving his vines to send their roots deep into the rocky soil struggling for water. This gives him low yields and very small concentrated berries with intense flavors. The wine has 5% Cabernet Franc blended in and it was aged 18 months in French Nevers oak barrels. Wine Enthusiast Magazine made this an Editors Choice and scored it 92 points saying "An impressive wine. Ed Sbragia wrestles that famously briary Dry Creek rusticity to the ground, forcing it into refined elegance. With straightforward blackberry, cherry, mocha and cedar flavors, it’s simply delicious for drinking now."
