Saxum Vineyards is a boutique winery overseen by winemakers Heather and Justin Smith in the Temple Gap area of Paso Robles, California. The winery focuses on red wines using the Rhone varietal stalwarts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Production is kept to the minimal output of under 3000 cases per year, with low yields divided between the Broken Stones, Heart Stone, James Berry, Booker, Rocket Block, and Bone Rock vineyards. The soils in the growing areas are mainly calcareous, providing incentive for roots to dig deep for natural moisture, with elevated locations that ensure balanced grape ripeness. The wines are handmade, organic, and sustainable, free of added chemicals or vineyard pesticides.  Read less

Woody, jammy and intense with a touch of obvious alcohol on the nose. Big and round with a soft entry, fairly intense acids here are not entirely integrated, lots of extract, lots of extracted tannins on th finish which continues to show some heat. Big and powerful with intense flavors of rosemary tinged, slightly baked plum and blackberry fruits but the structural disarray keeps this from fully appealing. Perhaps some time will help. I am not convinced.

2-3 hour decant. Not a very expressive nose as it probably wasn't fully opened up yet, but there's good, pure dark fruit on the palate with plenty of spice and the alcohol & acidity are all in nice balance. Medium to full bodied. Subtle but persisting finish, medium tannins. Nice showing. 94 points.

The 2005 Broken Stones, a blend of 74% Syrah, 24% Grenache, and the rest Mourvedre, is a beauty. Notes of licorice, forest floor, pepper, spice box, and loads of black and red fruits jump from the glass as well as saturate the palate. This full-bodie... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. 94-96 POINTS - ROBERT PARKER2005 Saxum James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red A Proprietary Blend Dry Red Table wine from  Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Central Coast, California, USA Wine Advocate # 172Aug 2007 Robert Parker (94-96) Drink 2009 - 2017 $150 (50) The 2005 James Berry Vineyard (one of the truly great vineyard sites in California) is a blend of 70% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, and the rest Grenache. This wine exhibits beautiful minerality intermixed with floral notes, creme de cassis, blackberry, and some damp earth and pepper. The wine is structured, rich, and one of the few wines that seems to require 2-4 years of bottle age. It should keep for two decades.

The 2005 ô44 James Berry Vineyard is a blend of 81% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 9% Grenache that was aged 44 months in a combination of small barrels and larger demi-muids. There are fewer than 100 cases of this inky/purple-tinged 2005, which represen... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
