Saxum Vineyards is a boutique winery overseen by winemakers Heather and Justin Smith in the Temple Gap area of Paso Robles, California. The winery focuses on red wines using the Rhone varietal stalwarts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Production is kept to the minimal output of under 3000 cases per year, with low yields divided between the Broken Stones, Heart Stone, James Berry, Booker, Rocket Block, and Bone Rock vineyards. The soils in the growing areas are mainly calcareous, providing incentive for roots to dig deep for natural moisture, with elevated locations that ensure balanced grape ripeness. The wines are handmade, organic, and sustainable, free of added chemicals or vineyard pesticides.  Read less

Huge, big, rich and gobby in blackberry, cassis and white pepper flavors, this 80% Syrah is blended with Grenache, which adds a vibrant cherry note. The wine has lots of alcohol, but is balanced, complex and lush. Wine Enthusiast. A Syrah wine from California in USA. 2003 Saxum Syrah Broken Stones 750ml

A blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache, and 4% Mourvedre, the 2003 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard, which will not be released until the fall, is a structured and broodingly backward offering. It boasts an inky/purple color in addition to classic aromas of blackberry liqueur, camphor, pain grille, and subtle notions of Provencal herbs and pepper. Full-bodied, with tremendous richness, great balance, and sweet tannin, this stunning, marvelously concentrated wine should benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and last for 12-15. The 2003s were bottled about seven weeks before my visit, but I could hardly complain about the fact they weren t showing. I highly recommend that wine enthusiasts who love Rhone Ranger wines pay a visit to the James Berry Vineyard, one of the true grand cru sites in the region.
