Saxum Broken Stones Paso Robles 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate): Getting a big 'Wow' in the nose, the not-yet-bottled 2012 Syrah Broken Stones (79% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah and the balance Grenache, Mourvedre and Roussanne) has beautiful sweetness in its cassis, raspberry, floral and peppery bouquet. Supple, seamless and downright sexy, it's one of the more approachable 2012s and should dish out plenty of pleasure on release. I love the tannin quality here, and this is beautiful all around. (Aug 2014)

The winery focuses on red wines using the Rhone varietal stalwarts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Production is kept to the minimal output of under 3000 cases per year, with low yields divided between the Broken Stones, Heart Stone, James Berry, Booker, Rocket Block, and Bone Rock vineyards. The soils in the growing areas are mainly calcareous, providing incentive for roots to dig deep for natural moisture, with elevated locations that ensure balanced grape ripeness. The wines are handmade, organic, and sustainable, free of added chemicals or vineyard pesticides.  Read less
