2004 Sawyer Cellars Estate Merlot Varietal Blend: 100% Merlot Case Production: 1,170 cases I’ve always had a bias against Merlot; my mind tended to think of the 80’s when you couldn’t taste the wine for the oak and had residual splinters of oak barrel in your mouth for days after sipping. The Sawyer Cellars 2004 Merlot is one of the three merlots that has helped me change my mind about merlot as a wine. I was a bit concerned when this wine was presented to me initially due to the price tag of $45.99; then I got over the price tag as it was being offered as a sampler. That sample presented hugely with a gorgeous color, big nose and a spectacular wave of flavor. This is not the style of merlot my mind has latched onto; this merlot has structure and style. It may prove to be one of the biggest, chewiest merlots I’ve tried to date. A very deep and intense ruby colored Merlot, much deeper and richer in color than expected in Merlots typically. The nose displays the classic expectations of a merlot with cherries, smoke and a hint of spice. The palate pairs wonderfully with the nose presenting toasted black cherries, raspberries, and black currants among floral fruits throughout lingering into a smooth elegant finish. This is how a merlot is intended to be produced, a classic for years to come with wonderful balance and fullness as few merlots can present. A perfect pairing for a pork roast marinated in orange habanera sauce dusted with cocoa powder prior to grilling to perfection.

Enjoyed last night with a great beef tenderloin steak. Bought the wine while visiting our son in Colorado Springs this summer, using Snooth recommendation. Paid $38.00, which I thought was a lot for a Merlot, but it was truly worth the price. Perfectly balanced, deep rich color and a velvet finish. Would recommend this wine for special evenings with good friends if you can still find a 2004.
