Sauvignon Blanc Reserva Vina Falernia 2017

Member Review by Jake Pippin:

Typically used to make Pisco in Chile, the small plantings of Pedro Ximenez used for still table wine is really only seen in the Elqui Valley of Chile. Elqui is one of Chile's northernmost wine regions and quite a mystical place in and of itself; it's no wonder they are experimenting with turning this grape into wine and it's actually not too bad. Fairly heavy on the lemon/lime flavors with some honeysuckle and apricot, Falernia's PX also exhibits some slight celery characteristics and an interesting musk of the sea on clams or shellfish. That being said this wine would go splendidly with seafood, particularly shellfish or shrimp. All in all it's unique and worth a little exploration if you want to try something different.

The company was founded in 1998 after Aldo Olivier Gramola realised the potential for producing superb wines in this seem-arid valley. Aldo settled with his family in the Elqui Valley in 1951 and has been producing grapes and wine there since 1975. The Falernia project was born after he met Giorgio Flessati, an enologist working in the Trentino region of northern Italy. This is an innovative venture given that Viña Falernia is Chile’s most northerly wine estate, a considerable distance from the country’s main wine-growing areas. The driving force has been a passion for the wine and the challenge of transforming a tract of desert into a green vineyard with enormous potential for producing premium wines, availing ourselves of the latest technology, the support of agronomist from Chile universities and of world renowned enologists. This deep plum dry wine from Chile had a fruity smell but the taste was not strongly fruity. Taste of smokey spicy plum. Nice balance of acidity but a little alcoholic. Great for a BBQ.

Really intense spicy nose with hints of bacon. Nicely balanced with bright and vibrant acidity. I really liked the texture and mouthfeel. Reminded me of northern Rhone wines, great concentration, long finish with really balanced tannins.

Grow up in the middle of the desert, showing the best of Syrah. The best option is Gran Reserve and the price, in Chile, is around US$ 12,00.

My Rating 89. This wine has a more elegant approach to syrah. nose has elegant restrained berry caracter. Taste is dry with fine grained tannins, oak is very subdued, fruit is concentrated but not overpowering. Try it!!

This Syrah is dense, spicy and smokey, with plum, pepper and herbal notes to boot. Nice medium long finish. Great value at around $10.

Brilliant yellow colour.Nose is intense reminiscent of figs, eldeflowers, grapefruits and sage. Good character (citrus and melon notes),acidity and long crisp finish on the palate. Very opulent wine.

WS 90pts. - WA 90pts. - Tasting Notes - Very bright color; elegant nose with black pepper and floral notes. Medium-full bodied with very soft tannins and good balance. Great length and fruity after taste.

Dark and winey, but not heavy, with lots of ripe, fleshy plum and blackberry fruit layered with white pepper, iron and violet notes. There s ample toast, but it s well-integrated, with a long finish. Drink now through 2012.

Dunkles Purpur. Würzige Cabernet-Nase, die mich an Eukalyptus, dunkle Schokolade und feine Vanille erinnert. Im Geschmack eine weiche Fülle, etwas Minze, blaubeerige Frucht und mit feinem Tannin durchwoben.
