Saurus Pinot Noir 2007

To be brutally sincere, it was until I tasted Schroeder's Saurus PN last year that I believed that Argentina never stood a chance when it came to producing a leading style of new world PN. I proudly stand corrected, as these guys out of San Patricio del Chañar (Neuquén) produce some of the best new world PN I have ever gotten to taste.

I can't say enough to recommend Schroeder's Saurus PN, as it is worth going out of your way to purchase (online, travel, anything it takes). The nose is really room-filling, with flowers, red fruit, cherries and spice. You get some of the violet hints you would find in say, Volnay, but with a personality of its own. Deference to the old world is present, despite a respectful divergence onto something entirely new.

Delicious red fruit,cherry and concentrated wild blueberry flavors. Great berry acidity underneath the fruit, along with just enough oak to define the structure perfectly. Think violet pastilles, spice and blueberry juice on the finish.

Bodega Schroeder named this label 'Saurus' given the winery's location near a dinosaur fossil excavation site, evident if you were to tour the facilities today. At any rate, they are certainly the guiding light for other Argentine producers of Pinot Noir in the cooler, Patagonian wine producing sub-regions.
